Sandown Friday Preview

Betcirca followers have been among the winners this week with four at Epsom on Wednesday and three more at Bath and Beverley on Thursday. Hopefully the good run can continue at a high quality at Sandown on Friday, highlighted by the Group 2 Bet365 Mile.

There is very little between half a dozen of these on official ratings, although it could be argued that Shifting Power is the class act. He chased home Kingman in the Irish Guineas last summer and was only narrowly beaten by Charm Spirit at Chantilly. My worry with him is whether he will be suited by the fast ground and the same certainly applies to Breton Park and Top Notch Tonto.

Bow Creek improved out of all recognition at the end of the season and represents Godolphin but I am siding with Andrew Balding’s Here Comes When. I’ve followed this one since he won at Chester handicap as a three-year-old and he could still be on the upgrade. The Balding horses are in good form and Here Comes When usually runs well fresh.

There is unlikely to be a Shergar in the Bet365 Classic Trial and the withdrawal of Grey Lion has weakened the contest. Commemorative does not have much of a turn of foot so I’d expect him to be prominent but Cape Clear Island has fitness on his side. He was outpaced at Newmarket last week but fairly rattled home and could be good value against the favourite.

Cannock Chase was unbeaten in three starts last season and looks a typical late improver for Sir Michael Stoute. It would be no surprise to see him land a Group 1 this season. He faces Postponed who won the Great Voltigeur for Luca Cumani last season but was behind Cannock Chase at Ascot. Arab Spring showed that Stoute can get them ready to win first time out and I’m prepared to take a chance on the horse’s fitness.

The Esher Cup looks a cracking good handicap to open the card at 1.30 but Purple Rock arrives with a big reputation. He still holds a Derby entry and he would have to win this off a mark of 85 to justify at trip to Epsom. Both Spring Offensive and Tom Hark ran with a great deal of promise in a hot handicap at Musselburgh while Yeenaan was unlucky in running last time out.

Purple Rock 1.30 @9-2 Paddy Power

Cannock Chase 2.00 @9-4 William Hill

Here Comes When 2.30 @11-2 Stan James

Cape Clear Island 3.00 @3-1 Coral

Aviva Premiership Weekend Preview – 24-26 April

The pressure is piling up with just three rounds of fixtures remaining ahead of the play-offs in the 2014/15 Aviva Premiership season, as the battle for a spot in the top four still continues.

There are some interesting clashes this weekend, including first v second as the Saints face Saracens at stadium:mk on Saturday, while there’s a key play-off crunch match at Twickenham on Sunday as the Wasps take on Exeter Chiefs.

Bath v London Irish – Friday 19:45 (GMT)

In the weekend’s opening fixture, Bath welcome back Kyle Eastmond, James Webber and Paul James to their starting line-up as they face London Irish.

Bath have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning nine of the last 10 meetings between the sides. Another win here for the Somerset side would all-but assure them of their play-off position.

Although struggling in 10th-place, London Irish don’t tend to get beaten heavily often, meaning a handicap bet on them could provide some good value.

Best Bet: London Irish to win with +15 handicap – 6/4 at BetVictor

Sale Sharks v Harlequins – Saturday 14:00 (GMT)

Seventh meets eighth at The Recreation Ground, with the play-offs pretty much out of reach for the pair. However, the Sharks still have an outside chance of securing a Champions Cup place if they can end the season on a high.

The Sharks edged out the Harlequins when the pair last met in November by a narrow 16-12 scorline.

Verdict: Sharks win

Gloucester v Newcastle Falcons – Saturday 15:00 (GMT)

Neither side has much left to play for this campaign other than pride, with Gloucester in ninth and the Falcons languishing one place above bottom spot.

Newcastle Falcons have recorded just four victories this seasons – one of which was a 20-10 victory over Gloucester, but you’d expect Gloucester to get revenge here.

Verdict: Gloucester win

Leicester Tigers v London Welsh – Saturday 15:00 (GMT)

Leicester’s five-game winning streak in the Premiership was ended last time out by the Saracens, but they should have little bother getting back to winning ways against the Welsh who have picked up just one point this season.

Verdict: Leicester win

Northampton Saints v Saracens – Saturday 15:15 (GMT)

A record crowd is expected at stadium:mk as the top two go head-to-head in this crucial encounter.

Saracens suffered semi-final heartbreak in the European Rugby Champions Cup last weekend, being narrowly beaten 13-9 by Clermont – who incidentally also disposed of the Saints in the previous round.

Saints boast a relatively comfortable six-point lead at the table summit at the moment, meaning Saracens will have to beat them – as they did in the Anglo-Welsh Cup in March – if they want to be in with a chance of ending the regular season in top spot.

Verdict: Saints win

Wasps v Exeter Chiefs – Sunday 14:00 (GMT)

The weekend’s action concludes with an intriguing play-off crunch match between the Wasps and Exeter Chiefs at Twickenham on Sunday.

The fourth-place Chiefs are currently three points clear of Leicester Tigers in fifth – who will surely beat the Welsh – and five points clear of their opponents. A win for the Wasps, therefore, could really blow the chase for the play-offs wide open, while a win for Exeter would effectively end Wasps’ hopes.

Verdict: Wasps win

Super 15 Rugby Round Eleven Preview

Super 15 Rugby Round Eleven Preview

Round Eleven is the ANZAC day round. For Australian and New Zealand teams it’s a time for remembrance and tribute for all those men and woman who gave their lives in world war back in 1914/15. The weekend has some exciting fixtures so check out all the odds and our predictions.

Waikato Chiefs v Western Force

Chiefs – $1.08

Force – $7.00

The Chiefs open the ANZAC day round by hosting the Force at Waikato Stadium. For the Chiefs they’ll be looking to make it four wins in a row however a season ending injury to Aaron Cruden means they start Marty McKenzie at 10 and prior All Black arrangements means Liam Messam takes a break. For the Force they will be desperate to break an 8 game losing streak and going to Waikato is a tough place to win but they have Matt Hodgson returning from injury so his battle with Sam Cane will be good to watch. The Chiefs will be too strong for the Force, expect to see the backline run rampant – Chiefs 13+

ACT Brumbies v Otago Highlanders

Brumbies – $1.35

Higlanders – $3.00

The Brumbies host the Highlanders at GIO Stadium. The Highlanders are travelling light with all their All Blacks remaining home as per the agreement with NZRU to rest them throughout the season. The Brumbies discipline has cost them points early in the last few rounds and giving a side like the Highlanders easy points will entice them for more. The Highlanders always play with alot of heart but with missing their key players, Fekitoa, Aaron & Ben Smith the Brumbies should be too good at home and expect Pocock to own the breakdown. It’ll be tight but the Brumbies will take it 1-12.

Canterbury Crusaders v Auckland Blues

Crusaders – $1.27

Blues – $3.50

Two age old rivals play on a remembrance weekend, the Crusaders play host to the Blues. Both teams lost in their local derbies last round, the Crusaders are hot and cold this year finding great form one week and the next looking like a 4th 15. For the Blues, there isnt much to say but they’re playing for pride now with 1 win from 9 games. We can expect this game to be a battle as most New Zealand derby matches are, the Blues have rested All Blacks Kaino and Piutau but brought in an experienced front row of Woodcock, Mealamu and Faumuina. For the Crusaders it’s likely they’ll have Crotty back but Dagg is still a week away from recovery. The Blues have nothing to lose and will out gun the Crusaders. Blues by 1-12.

NSW Waratahs v Melbourne Rebels

Waratahs – $1.20

Force – $4.20

The Waratahs host the Rebels at ANZ Stadium. Both sides coming off good wins last weekend and will be looking to extend their streak. The Tahs won tough last week beating the Hurricanes with heroic defense and the Rebels fought hard against the Brumbies is a surprise win. The Force are underdogs for this match but the Tahs will need to be careful, the Force have a knack of getting under their oppositions skin and the game turns into a grind which in this fixture will suit the Rebels. At the same time the Rebels need to shut down the big men and outside backs of the Tahs fast, given space to run they’ll hurt the Rebels. This will go down to the wire but the Rebels will get up, Rebels 1-12.

Lions v Free State Cheetahs

Lions – $1.33

Cheetahs – $3.10

The Lions host the Cheetahs at Ellis Park. The Lions come off the bye and will be well rested after a long tour of Australia and New Zealand and for the Cheetahs they were outscored last round in their loss to the Reds. This should be a traditional South African battle so expect a tight game with the forwards getting most of the ball. The Cheetahs have lost Willie le Roux so Joe Pietersen moves to fullback, expect Pietersen to use his boot more than the dynamic le Roux. The Lions were playing some good rugby before the bye knocking over the Bulls and Sharks and should do the same here but not my much. Lions more complete around the park should walk away, Lions 1-12.

Stormers v Bulls

Stormers – $1.65

Bulls – $2.15

The Stormers host the Bulls at Newlands. This should be another great  South African battle with both side coming off tight wins last round and whoever wins this match will lead the South African conference. The Stormers have been more consistant than the Bulls with some results going against them but in each game they have battled win or lose. The Bulls, one week smash the Crusaders and the following are beaten by the Lions then are in a high scoring affair with the Reds. The focus in this game will be with the big boys and who can get the front foot ball, dont expect to see as much running rugby as these teams have displayed over the last 3 rounds. Stormers will keep it tight and make it count, Stormers by 1-12.

Queensland Reds v Wellington Hurricanes

Reds – $2.90

Hurricanes – $1.37

The round ends with the Reds hosting the Hurricanes at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The Hurricanes were humbled last round in their loss to the Waratahs whilst the Reds took a tight victory from the Cheetahs.  The Hurricanes have lost Jason Woodword for the season with a broken ankle but should remain upbeat with talented Milner-Skudder available. The Reds are always tough to beat at home no matter their form and the Canes will want to get back their winning ways so its crucial that the Canes play their game and bring back that defense that has served them well. If we see a messy game expect a high scoring affair and the Reds to take it but if Hurricanes control the game from start to finish they’ll take it easy, Hurricanes 13+.

Bye week – Sharks

Premier League Darts: Week 12 – Cardiff Preview

Last week’s enthralling action in Aberdeen saw Michael van Gerwen lose his unbeaten record, Barney back at his best, and Phil Taylor picking up three points from a possible four in his double fixture round.

There are just four rounds of fixtures left before the play-offs, but who will boost their own chances at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff?

Stephen Bunting v Gary Anderson

Despite holding Phil Taylor to a draw in the final match of the night last week, Bunting’s hopes of reaching the play-offs in his debut Premier League season have now all-but faded away – even if he wins his remaining four fixtures. It’s been an encouraging first season for Bunting though, and he has certainly shown he is capable of performing at this level, beating Adrian Lewis and Dave Chisnall in the early weeks, while also taking points off James Wade and Phil Taylor.

Currently sitting in third-place, three points ahead of the chasing pack, you’d expect Gary Anderson to be featuring in this season’s play-offs. This is an important round for the Scot though, as there are two fixtures in the night for him, with the second coming against MVG – making this first fixture a must-win if he wants to stay comfortable in his play-off position.

Verdict: Gary Anderson win – 8/13 at Paddy Power

James Wade v Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen’s unbeaten record came grinding to a halt last week, as he was soundly beaten by his resurgent compatriot, Raymond van Barneveld. MVG continues to lead the pack though and is all-but assured of his play-off position.

James Wade, meanwhile, put in a solid performance to earn a point against Gary Anderson last week, but don’t expect him to end his winless streak – currently standing at four – here, though.

Verdict: Michael van Gerwen win – 4/7 at BetVictor

Raymond van Barneveld v Dave Chisnall

Barney is bang back in form following his relegation scare just three weeks ago. Comprehensive back-to-back wins over Phil Taylor and van Gerwen show he is most certainly not done with Premier League Darts yet this season. He’ll need to continue that winning streak here though if he wants get right into the play-off mix.

Standing in Barney’s way is one of this season’s form players, Dave Chisnall, who remains second in the table. Chizzy prevailed with a 7-5 victory when these two met way back in week two, but the Dutchman looks in imperious form at the moment with a point to prove.

Verdict: Raymond van Barneveld win – 6/4 at SkyBet

Phil Taylor v Adrian Lewis

Just one win from his last four will have frustrated Taylor, in a competition where he is yet to find any consistency this season. He holds onto the fourth play-off spot by the skin of his teeth at the moment, and faces an intriguing opponent in Adrian Lewis, who ever-so-narrowly missed out on relegation in week nine, but has now won his last three to move into play-off contention.

Lewis is just one point behind The Power, but does boast a game in hand – making this a potentially pivotal fixture for the pair.

Verdict: Phil Taylor win – 11/10 at William Hill

Gary Anderson v Michael van Gerwen

In a big end to the night’s action, first meets third in what should be an intriguing battle.

Both look almost certainly to feature in the play-offs, but they’ll be eager to finish as high up the table as possible. A win for Anderson would keep league leader van Gerwen in his sights for the time being.

MVG triumphed 7-4 when they last met in Liverpool.

Verdict: Michael van Gerwen win – 21/20 at Boylesports

NRL Telstra Premiership Round Eight Preview

NRL Telstra Premiership Round Eight Preview:

Round 7 our picks went out the window, calling 2 of 7. Round 8 is ANZAC round which means uniforms that pay tribute to the troops and mouth watering fixtures.

Canterbury Bulldogs v Wests Tigers

Bulldogs – $1.65

Tigers – $2.15

Round eight opens at ANZ stadium hosting the Bulldogs and Tigers. The Bulldogs come off a win after finally getting on top of Manly late in the game and the Tigers come off an embarrasing loss after going 22-0 up then leaking 30 unanswered points to the Raiders. For the Dogs Josh Morris, Kasiano and Tim Browne return and for the Tigers big red Keith Galloway couldn’t recover from his shoulder injury. The Tigers look the more dangerous out of the two sides especially with the likes of Tedesco and Brooks running hot but the Bulldogs bring a more ruggered approach to the game and will play for close to 80 minutes with more depth on the bench. Expect a high scoring game but the Doggies will walk away with the spoils, Bulldogs 13+

New Zealand Warriors v Gold Coast Titans

Warriors – $1.33

Titans – $3.10

Mt Smart plays host to the Warriors and Titans. Both teams sitting just outside the top 8, equal on competition points but their for / against record lets them down. For the Warriors Konrad Hurrell is dropped, David Fusitu’a replaces him whilst Sam Rapira returns along with debutant Raymond Faitala-Mariner. The Titans lose Dave Taylor to suspension, Agnatius Paasi and Ryan Simpkins to injury but gain Nate Myles. The Warriors were guilty last round of poor ruck defense and were made to pay. They also made too many errors which the Cowboys were able to capitalise on, tidying these areas up is essential. The Titans, slow starters but put the Panthers away well. The Warriors at home are tough to beat and will be notice so expect the Warriors to come out  firing, they need to look after Falloon or we’ll see the Titans replicate the Cowboys display. It’ll be a good battle, expect the Warriors to get an early lead and hold on, Warriors 1-12.

Newcastle Knights v Queensland Cowboys

Knights – $2.30

Cowboys – $1.57

Hunter stadium plays host to a mouth watering fixture between the Knights and Cowboys. The Knights have already but the Cowboys to the sword in round 2, both teams unchanged from last round. Expect to see some fire works here the Cowboys will certainly be out for revenge for the loss earlier in the season. The Knights will need to do a better job around the ruck than the Warriors if they want to keep Granville quiet who will be confident around some big men. Both packs boast size and the Cowboys pack is seen as the form pack right now so expect to see the likes the Snowden, Jeremy Smith, Tariq and Korbin Sims going hammer and tonge to try and upset the Cowboys pack. The Knights will get up, Knights 1-12.

Sydney City Roosters v St George Illawarra Dragons

Roosters – $1.45

Dragons – $2.60

The Roosters host the Dragons at Allianz. The Roosters are in trouble, 3 losses in a row and potentially a 4th against a Dragons side who is on a run of 5 wins. For the Roosters Waerea-Hargreave’s is out and Sam Moa replaces him, the Dragons are unchanged. The Dragons defense has been the difference in their run on wins, big hits around the ground and grinding goal line heroics. The halves match up between Mitchell Pearce and Benji Marshall should provide some spark in the game with both playing good footy. The Roosters will throw everything they have at Dragons and the Dragons will hold, expect some big hits and a expansive game from both. Dragons defense will win the day, Dragons by 1-12.

Melbourne Storm v Manly Sea Eagles

Storm – $1.25

Sea Eagles – $3.70

AAMI hosts the Storm and Sea Eagles. The Storm sit pretty on top of the table as a proud Manly outfit continue to camp at the very bottom. It doens’t get any better for Manly, losing Jamie Lyon once again to injury however Keiran Foran is back. The Storm running hot are unchanged. There isn’t much to say about this game other than Manly are in for a drubbing, expect to see the regulars like Cronk and Smith running the ship behind the big boys. Storm 13+

Brisbane Broncos v Parramatta Eels

Broncos – $1.33

Eels – $3.10

The Broncos host the Eels at Suncorp Stadium. The Broncos licking their wounds after a physical loss to the Dragons last round seeing Hodges out with injury again, Alex Glenn has not recovered from his facial injuries which puts Thaiday back into the 2nd row and Adam Blair starting at prop. For the Eels who are still blowing hot and cold this season but managed to put away the Knight last round make a few changes with Reece Robinson to fullback, Hopoate to centre and Folau to the wing. On top of good defense the Broncos were their own worst enemy against the Dragons and will be looking to make amends, expect to see Hunt, Milford and Marantra make a lot of metres and breaks behind the big runs from the pack. The Eels will be up for a scrap but their form is too inconsistent and if they want to stand a chance it they better be blowing hot. The Broncos will play the 80 minutes and win easy, Broncos by 13+

Penrith Panthers v Cronulla Sharks

Panthers – $2.15

Sharks – $1.65

The Panthers play host to the Sharks at Pepper Stadium. The Panthers were on the end of a 30 point drubbing round 7 courtesy of the Titans and the Sharks bullied the Rabbitohs to take a hard grind win. For the Panthers injuries have struck with Josh Mansour and Brent Kit out, repacing them is George Jennings and Sam Anderson. The Sharks get back Gallen. The Sharks really stepped up last weekend round against the Rabbitohs and will look to continue that form, the Panthers will provide the Sharks with a good battle but there isn’t much to seperate the teams man for man. Going off form the Sharks will win this arm wrestle by 1-12.

Panthers

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Canberra Raiders

Rabbitohs – $1.27

Raiders – $3.50

The Rabbitohs and Raiders close the ANZAC round clashes at Barlow park. The Rabbitohs will be keen to get their season back on track after losing 2 game on the trot and the Raiders will look to continue their attacking form after putting 30 unanswered points on the Tigers but leaking 22 early. The Rabbitohs are unchanged but the Raiders say goodbye to Dane Tilse who has signed on with Hull KR in the UK. Paul Vaughan shifts to the front row and Fensom is back at lock. The Raiders will hold their own up front but can’t afford to leak points early against a desperate Rabbitohs side. The Rabbitohs are vulnerable in the halves with Reynolds and Sutton still missing so expect to see the Raiders put pressure on the youngsters McInnes and Keary. Its a tough game for the Rabbitohs to get back on track but we think this will be the game they return. Rabbitohs to take it at the death, 1-12.

Horse Racing Preview – April 23rd

The horse racing action moves on to Beverley and Bath on Thursday with the unusually dry weather already having an impact on the ground. The going is good to firm on the Yorkshire track, good in places, but firm at Bath.

Hopefully there won’t be too many non-runners and the cards will hold up pretty well overnight. The 2.30 at Beverley is a competitive three-year-old handicap over seven furlongs and it may be worth taking a chance on Keith Dalgleish’s Go Dan Go. He is yet to score in five attempts but did little wrong when chasing home Second Wave at Redcar last time. The Godolphin-owned winner could turn out to be quite useful and Go Dan Go is worth another chance at this level.

Sir Michael Stoute got one on the board at Newbury at the weekend with Arab Spring in the John Porter Stakes. He saddles an interesting runner in Pleiades in the 3.00 race with Graham Lee on board. The son of Galileo looked a bit weak as a juvenile but Lee made all on him to win over course and distance in September. Graham Gibbons is in the saddle on Thursday and a mark of 84 may prove to be lenient.

Over at Bath, Roger Charlton saddles Master Zephyr in the 6.55 race with William Twiston-Davies in the saddle. He was unplaced in decent maiden races at Sandown and Newbury last season but ran out a good winner when dropped in grade at Wolverhampton in October. Although he had only a neck to spare over Romance Story, he was staying on powerfully at the finish and this race looks a fairly gentle introduction.

Austin Friars is an all-weather winner for Godolphin and the majority of those have struggled when switched to the turf. Triple Dip cannot be supported with any confidence after being beaten at the odds of 1-20 last time out so Master Zephyr gets the vote.

The runners in the maiden at 7.25 are not the quickest on four legs but Crisscrossed, Honourable Action and Ya Hade Ye Delil have all shown signs of ability. Frankie Dettori has made a great start to the season and I’m hoping to see him try forcing tactics on Ye Hade Ye Delil who has looked very one-paced in his previous races.

In the closing handicap, Akavit can defy a further 5lbs rise for Ed de Giles. He was in front a long way from home last time and Lorelei may have been flattered by her proximity at the line.

Go Dan Go 2.30 Beverley @9-2 Paddy Power
