Lingfield All-Weather Championships Preview

Lingfield stages the All-Weather Championship meeting on Friday with seven good quality races highlighted by the Coral Easter Classic.

It may not be Dubai World Cup night but the blue of Godolphin are very much in evidence once again and Tryster is likely to go off odds-on favourite. The four-year-old is on a winning streak of four after cutting down Grendisar to win the Winter Derby last time out.

I had tipped Grendisar each-way that day after a string of fine efforts but was hoping that Martin Harley would be able to hold him up a little longer. The horse only has one short burst of acceleration and practically pulls himself up in front so I knew what to expect when he led at the furlong pole. In fairness to Harley, it was a very slow early pace and he was probably frightened to get blocked off in his run.

Grendisar has now been in the first two in all of his last ten races and is again available at an each-way price. I’d rather take my chances on him that support Tryster at odds-on.

The All-Weather Mile has attracted a very competitive field including Mindurownbusiness and Sovereign Debt. We tipped both of them when successful at the last big meeting here so we are left with a tricky decision. Both Roger Varian and David Nicholls decided to bypass the Lincoln to wait for this and it is Sovereign Debt who is top on official figures. He is best held up so Joe Fanning will have to weave his way through a big field here.

There seems to be plenty of confidence behind Lexington Times in the three-year-old mile championship. He still holds a 2000 Guineas entry but has a tough rival in John Gosden’s Tempus Temporis. Blinkers seem to have been the making of the son of Dynaformer and he has run away with his last two races impressively.

James Tate has his stable in good form and I like the chances of Lamar in the Fillies’ And Mares’ at 1.40. She was just denied by Grendisar last time out and has most to fear from French raider Fresles. She was a close second to Intransigent here over six furlongs in November so will be familiar with the surface.

Chelmsford Wednesday Preview

The new flat turf season may have started on Saturday but the summer festivals seem a long way off with Britain being battered by storms this week. Flat racing fans have to content themselves with all-weather action for the time being but there is a good card at Chelmsford on Wednesday.

The feature race is the Totepool Handicap over a mile and three-quarters at 4.00 with five last-time-out winners in the field of seven. Lady Cecil saddles top weight Tacticus who has bolted up in two minor races at Southwell but the handicapper has punished him accordingly. He was never off the bridle to defy a 6lbs penalty last time but is now up a further 13lbs.

His rivals include the promising Wakea with Dubai World Cup winning rider William Buick in the saddle. The son of Cape Cross looks like a useful stayer in the making but Ryan Moore had to get after him to win on his seasonal debut. Jeremy Noseda has a high opinion of this one while Fergall made a belated start on the flat, winning by nine lengths at Lingfield. He has already won three times over hurdles so could be fairly treated on a mark of 87. I am reluctant to oppose a horse in such good form as Tacticus so he just gets the vote.

The action gets under way at 2.0 with a maiden race over a mile and a quarter. Marco Botti’s Giantouch has the best form in the book and looks sure to improve for this step up in trip but I like the filly Nawaasy. She raced very wide on her debut and was still beaten only a length at the finish. If she has made natural progress through the winter for Charles Hills, a race like this could be an ideal starting point.

Luke Morris can win the sprint at 3.00 on top weight Middle East Pearl for James Tate. He tried to cover her up in behind at Kempton last time when third to Zebs Lad, a fair effort on her first start since December. The danger may be the former Sir Mark Prescott-trained Vejovis. He has won over seven furlongs but is dropping back to the minimum trip after nearly making all over six last time.

Tate and Morris can complete a double on the card with Kempton winner Clampdown in the last race at 5.00. He carries a 6lbs penalty but this looks a much easier contest with the main threat likely to come from Three Gracez.

Nawaasy 2.00 @7-4 Bet365

Middle East Pearl 2.00 @2-1 SkyBet

Tacticus 4.00 @7-2 William Hill

Eels (29) v (16) Rabbitohs

Round 3 started off in style with the Eels hosting the Premiers at Pirtek. The matched opened with the Rabbitohs scoring through Joel Reddy (8th) on the receiving end of slick passing through the line. The Eels replied 6 minutes later courtesy of John Folau who took a short pass 10 out to step and crash through defenders (14th).  Reynolds was done for decent towards the pocket referee and Sandow converted the penalty however he redeemed himself shortly after putting up a difficult bomb which was blundered by the Eels and Grensmuhl pounced for his first (34th). On the stroke of half time a barn storming run 10 out from John Folau carrying 3 Rabbitohs with him over the line saw him pick up his second try of the night (39th). The Eels were at it again early in the second half with some slick hands passing through the line giving Reece Robinson the advantage over his inside defense and he kicked into 2nd gear to get around a diving Inglis for the try (42nd). The Premiers under the pump in the second half, taking nearly 20 minutes to get substantial possession and a try scoring opportunity. A numbers game out wide saw the Rabbitohs strike back with a try to Alex Johnston (60th). It didn’t take long for the Eels to reply with Reece Robinson again getting the better of the defense, getting around his opposite on the outside (67th). Sandow extended the lead by 7 with a drop goal (76th) and on the stroke of full time Sandow grubber was spilled back into his path and easy pick up and dive gave Sandow the last laugh (79th).

Wests Tigers (24) v (25) Canterbury Bulldogs

ANZ Stadium hosted the Tigers and Bulldogs, a match full of expectation. The Tigers first out of the blocks with a try inside 4 minutes when Kyle Lovett slipped through a yawning Bulldogs defensive line. The Doggies hit back after some well constructed plays through the middle to have Frank Prichard bulldoze close to the line and make an offload millimeters from the ground to put Curtis Rona over (15th).  Both team squandering chances for the remainder of the half. The Tigers charged into the second 40 much like the first scoring early with Luke Brooks blocking a poor grubber into the Tigers half, he scooped up the deflection running 50 metres to dot down (45th). 3 minutes later some slick running from dummy half put the Tigers ahead of the advantage line and a tactical grubber into space bounced favorably into Tedescos’ hands only having to run over the line to dot down (48th). Brooks was at it again from dummy half putting through a pin point grubber for Tedesco to run onto making it his second for the night (55th). With the gap widening the Doggies managed to apply some pressure to the Tigers with their big men running hard, Lichaa found himself over the try line after beating some tired tackles close to the line (58th). Curtis Rona added to his tally 8 minutes later after some excellent dummy pass skills courtesy of Kasiano to feed an open Rona (66th). The Doggies evened up the game with 5 to go through a Josh Morris run away. Golden point commenced and an 83rd minute droppy from Moses Mbye sealed victory for the Bulldogs.

Newcastle Knights (26) v (14) Penrith Panthers

The unbeaten Knights hosted a Penrith Panthers outfit missing Soward and Segearo at Hunter Stadium. The hosts were strongest early on with a try to Chris Houston (7th) after receiving a short ball 5 out showing great balance and footwork for a big man to dot down. A dummy half run catching the Panthers defenders napping extended the score (14th) courtesy of Clydsdale.  Mounting pressure was taking its toll on the Panthers with well worked second man play seeing Gidley take the contact and bounce out of the tackle to crash over for the Knights 3rd (17th). After so much pressure the Panthers finally got a real attacking opportunity and cashed in through slick passing from the left hand attack feeding Mansour who gracefully stepped inside his opposite to dot down (23rd). Two missed opportunities from the Panthers saw them go into half 14 points down. Uate was the next man on the board with the Knights line drawing the defense to lead to an overlap, Uate dotting down (52nd). The Panthers hitting back, attacking the right hand defense and only to spin it back the other way and Moylan hitting a gap 20 out to dot down (65th). Cronulla Sharks (22) v (24) Gold Coast Titans

Both teams winless coming into the round, the Sharks hosted the Titans at Remondis. Michael Gordon putting the Sharks on the board early with a penalty (2nd) after a high shot. The opening 20 was dull as both sides were guilty of poor execution. Dave Taylor eventually crashing over after some ugly play 10 out from both sides losing possession, Taylor catching out defenders not playing the whistle (20th). The Sharks were quick to reply, Valentine Holmes getting the luck of the bounce with a dodgy grubber falling into his hands and he had little work to do beating his opposite on the outside (26th). Another Sharks try was on the board after the Sharks dissected the Titans up through the middle with Ennis running support to dot down under the posts (32nd). James Roberts claimed a try just inside of halftime with the Sharks defense ball watching a grubber hoping it would go out (41st). A pinpoint kick 20 out from Robson into the in-goal area was casually claimed by Holmes getting his second (47th). Nate Myles turned playmaker with a short burst 10 out and a beautiful short ball to Sezer on his shoulder seeing Sezer crash over (59th). Michael Gordon extended the Sharks lead with two penalties (65th & 72nd) after the Titans ill discipline in the tackle cost them. The four point lead evaporated with a soft pass on attack being intercepted by James Roberts who dotted down to even it up, Sezer converting to give the Titans the win.

The Dragons dominating possession inside the opening 10 with with Nightingale dotting in the corner after a slick offload from Duggan in contact (9th). Ill discipline from the Sea Eagles at ruck time cost them 3 points, pushing over the ball player, Widdop converting (24th). Duggan falling short on the stroke of halftime to extend the lead. Hiku nearly opening the Sea Eagles account early into the half with a heroic dive for the corner only to plant the ball out of play but with more possession midway into the second the Eagles finally dotting down through a Keiran Foran grubber cleaned up by Brayden Willame (58th). Off the ball infringement from Luke Burgess 30 out cost the Sea Eagles another 2 points with Widdop slotting the conversion (69th). The Sea Eagles had appeared to score through Willame but the officials deemed the Foran pass to go forward in the previous play. Dragons hold on.

The Broncos continued their crisp passing game catching the Warriors defense on the back foot, Lachlan Maranta diving over in the opposite corner (16th). The Warriors breaking the Broncos line but failing to convert points, Broncos dotting down again with Jarrod Wallace crashing over by the sticks (38th). Early into the second half the Warriors claimed their own bomb with a tap back to Allwood who found Townsend inside him, Townsend sprinting 10 to dive to over for the Warriors first (45th). Sydney Roosters (34) v (6) Canberra Raiders

The Roosters hosting the Canberra Raiders at ALLIANZ Stadium. The hosts hot favorites going into the match, they did not disappoint the home crowd. Shaun Kenny-Dowall opened the scoring for the hosts after the Rooster line fed a series of passes gaining the advantage line and Pearce throwing a superb cut out pass to Kenny-Dowall who dotted down in the corner (4th). Tuivasa-Sheck extended the lead after he found a gaping hole in the defense, easing past the last man to score (10th). The Roosters continuing to make metres and gain ascendency found them over again after Blake Ferguson ran a great angle from 10 out, dummying, and the defence falling off gifted Ferguson an easy try (27th). Minutes out from half time an well constructed Raiders attack was finished off with a soft grubber which bounced favorably for Croker who beat the man and dotted down to open the Raiders account. That was all she wrote for the Raiders with the Roosters scoring 3 minutes into the second half, the Raiders defense flat footed and falling for the support runners allowing Jennings to walse over (43rd). Daniel Tupou was next on the board through air supremecy, easily defusing a bomb and crashing over the line (48th). The Cowboys were hot on a reply with hard yards up the middle and Thurston throwing a ranging cut out pass to Winterstein with the overlap, easily stepping inside to dive over (12th). Koroibete difussed a high bomb will ease and caught the attacking Cowboys off guard as he charged through napping defenders to race 90 meters and score (27th). Super 15 rugby results round 7

Could the Hurricanes extend their unbeaten start to the competition and would the Blues finally get a win? Here’s how the round played out. Super 15 rugby results recapped!

Wellington Hurricanes (36) v (12) Melbourne Rebels

Conference and league leaders hosted the Melbourne Rebels at the Cake tin, Wellington. The Canes opened their account 11 minutes in with an overlap on the short side of the Rebels defense, TJ Perenara sitting on the shoulder to take the inside pass, converted by ex Rebel Jason Woodward. Both teams guilty throughout the half of breakdown infringements with Mike Harris and Woodward trading conversions, the half finishing 10-12 Rebels. The Hurricanes applied pressure early into the second half with good line out maul and grinding work finally spreading the ball out close and wide for Cory Jane to dot down (43rd) with Woodward slotting the sideline conversion. Midway through the second Callum Gibbons picked up his first super try after a turn over inside the Hurricanes 22 and a punt down field saw Cory Jane deflect the bounce of the ball with his chest and Gibbons scooping the ball up and running away for the try (57th). Perenara picked himself up a yellow card (68th) for continuous infringing around the ruck. The Rebels could not get the upper hand with the extra man and the Hurricanes subs made a strong impact with Milner-Skudder picking up his first try (76th) and a 2nd moments later through soft hands out wide (80th).

Queensland Reds (17) v (18) Lions

Quade Coopers return couldn’t inspire the Reds, a relatively uneventful first half full of fumbles and mistakes. The Lions were on the board first with sustained pressure from the forwards and aggressive running from the backs, Vorster got slightly outside of his opposite in the far corner to gracefully dive with an outstretched arm to dot down (13th). Just outside of half time a poor line out throw by the Reds was claimed and the Lions counterattacked with a hard run by flank Tecklenburg saw him crash over by the posts with Jantes converting (48th). The Reds had the scrum feed 10 out from the line and powerfully drove through to be awarded a penalty try as the Lions pack disengaged (52nd), Cooper converting. The Reds were next to score again through more forward pressure and quick hands through the backs close in to see centre Kerevi crash over to put the Reds ahead (67th). 3 minutes later, ill discipline from the Reds cost them 3 points when Jantjies converted (70th). The game rounded off with the Reds in possession and lining up a field goal, yet Cooper too slow out of the blocks and his kick was charged.

Waikato Chiefs (37) v (27) Freestate Cheetahs

Waikato Stadium hosted the Chiefs v Cheetahs. A high scoring affair with ill discipline and red mist rearing its ugly head. The Chiefs opened their account inside the first 2 minutes with Sonny Bill Williams gaining the advantage line and with a short offload found the hands of Leitch who crashed over (2nd). What looked to be the Chiefs opening the flood gates saw Messam race away for another Chiefs try after what looked to be a regulation maul, Messam peeled away and dotted down (17th). Fitzgerald was binned (23rd) for sacking the support mauler and the Cheetahs hit back with a try to Prinsloo (27th) after the Chiefs were caught napping at the maul with no defenders driving the Cheetahs pack. Tameifuna was next in the bin after he sacked the maul illegally (32nd). The half rounding off 14-13 Chiefs, setting up an exciting 2nd 40. Cruden slotting penalty goals (45th & 52nd) in an uneventful opening. Fullback McKenzie blundering a grubber inside the Chiefs 22 which was deflected, Cruden attempted to clean up only to fumble the ball and Brussow pounced to score under the posts to even it up (53rd). Inside the final quarter Cheetahs lost Brussow for 10 minutes due to ill discipline (66th) and the Chiefs took advantage of the extra man at scrum-time inside the 22 with Leitch twisting off the back of the scrum and feeding Sam Cane who crashed over (67th). Augustine Pulu gutted the Cheetahs up the middle with a brilliant run, off loading in the tackle to a charging Horrell with the help of Sam Cane crashed over for the try (75th). Sustained pressure from the Cheetahs in the final minute saw them claw back a try with Brussow taking a quick tap and driving over (80th), too little too late.

Otago Highlanders (39) v (21) Stormers

The Highlanders hosted the Stormers at Forsyth Bar Stadium in Dunedin. The opening quarter was shaky from both sides; Highlanders slow to start were caught out through good retention from the Stormers albeit some dubious passes and knock on’s during the phases, de Jongh holding on nicely to an overhead pass, stepping inside for the try (18th). The Highlanders seemed to come alive after the try striking back with some fast thinking courtesy of Aaron Smith who planted the ball against the bottom of the posts. The Highlanders were on the board again after Naholo anticipated a Stormers pass perfectly and ran away to dot down under the posts (33rd). On the stroke of half time an Aaron Smith grubber just outside the Stormers 22 was deflected into the hands of Naholo who raced away for the line with one man to beat, Naholo steam rolled Kolbe to score. The hosts continued their first half dominance early into the 2nd half with great retention play from backs and forwards. Patrick Osborne first man off the ruck powered his way over the line (47th) courtesy of an excellent Aaron Smith short pass. Aaron Smith was binned for infringing at the breakdown (56th) resulting in Stormers hitting back through Rhodes (60th) driving over the line to eat away at the deficit. The host’s hard running was taking its toll on the visitors with replacement flank Dan Pryor splitting two defenders 22 out wide after the Stormers were caught short. Late into the half Kolbe cut up the Otago defense through a well run move from the backs which ended with de Jongh taking a pass 10 out to stroll over for his second (75th), Marty Banks rounded the game off went a converted penalty (79th).

The Blues winless so far in the competition were hosted by Waratahs in Sydney. Phipps opened the hosts account early on with a well constructed backline move opening the Blues up and Michael Hooper running a great angle back inside to feed Phipps who dotted down under the posts (7th). The Tahs continued to dominate but failed to convert their opportunities through the half. Daniel Bowden converted two penalties (13th & 23rd ) to see the Blues close in on their hosts in an uneventful, stop start half of rugby. The Blues hit back with a try of their own in the second half, an excellent pick and go by veteran Mealamu put the Blues on the front foot and some quick ruck play and slick hands saw Francis Saili dissect 3 Waratah defenders on the line to score (53rd). Ill discipline from the Blues saw Foley convert three penalties (57th, 60th, & 68th) to put the hosts back in front, Kaino was sent to the bin (71st) for a high tackle on Dave Dennis. The extra man proved vital for the Tahs who went from right to left stretching the Blues defence, Betham cruising over (74th) to put the game out of reach for the Blues.

Ebersohn converting two penalties (30th & 38th) was all the action accounted for in the first half. Inside 2 minutes the Sharks were the first to dot down after Steyn through a dodgy pass where the pass interrupted the defense and Marais took advantage to run away for the try (42nd).  Ebersohn missed a penalty from out in front and the Sharks countered with Marais darting out of his 22 to pass off to Mvovo who gallantly raced away (67th). Many critics have called for a review of the Super Rugby officating and use of the TMO in light of the high amount of yellow cards and strange decisions. Dubious calls regarding the definition of a high tackle such as players ducking into tackles only to be caught high. Ruck and maul laws such as an uncontested drive from a line out to a maul, what is considered obstruction? With referees focusing heavily on cleaning up these area’s are they being to harsh? Let’s see what SANZAR referee boss Lydon Bray can do to help clear this up.

International Soccer – Italy v England Preview

Although we landed five successful bets on the England v Lithuania match, we were left cursing as England failed to find one more goal to clinch our forecast 5-0 outcome. They now travel to Italy for a friendly International which should tell us more about the progress made by Roy Hodgson’s side in recent months.

Post-match quotes from Wayne Rooney suggesting that teams will start to fear England must be put down to over-enthusiasm from the skipper. I don’t think the Germans will be quaking in their boots just yet after a few comfortable victories against poor opposition. Germany have been spluttering themselves since Brazil and just about scrambled a draw at home to Australia while the likes of Brazil and Spain have plenty of problems of their own.

Italy beat England in the World Cup but showed a lack of adventure which ultimately cost them dear against Uruguay, albeit in a game marred by the Suarez biting incident. The Italians have a new coach and are going through a re-building phase so it should be fairly evenly matched. Had the game been at Wembley, you would fancy England to come out on top.

Of course, I have to mention Harry Kane as the hype machine has gone into overdrive after his debut goal. Hodgson will be under pressure to give the Tottenham striker his first full cap on Tuesday and that will provide him with valuable experience. I don’t like these friendly games much as a betting medium and a draw seems the safest option.

The pick of the evening’s International games has to be the clash between The Netherlands and Spain. The visitors will be spurred on by the prospect of revenge for that 5-1 thrashing in Brazil which effectively brought their World Cup dreams crashing down. They too are trying to rebuild and are likely to introduce some new players on Tuesday night.

Both sides struggled in their weekend Euro qualifiers, Spain scraping a 1-0 win over the Ukraine and the Netherlands rescuing a point in a 1-1 home draw with Turkey. The Dutch are without the influential Robben and Van Persie at present while Diego Costa is an absentee for Spain. I expect this game to be tight as well but Spain may just be good enough to grab the victory. The Netherlands are struggling under Guus Hiddink in his second spell with four defeats in seven games.

Prince Bishop stars on Dubai World Cup night

A top quality card on Dubai World Cup night featuring five Group 1 races ended with success for the Maktoum family when Prince Bishop stormed to victory in the main event.

For much of the race it had looked as though California Chrome would add his name to the roll of honour but he had no answer when William Buick produced Prince Bishop on his outside. The winner has been a grand servant to Saeed bin Suroor with eleven victories in a 28-race career but this is by far his biggest success.

It was quite a night for the veterans with Brown Panther winning the Dubai Gold Cup for Tom Dascombe and Sole Power returning to his best in the Al Quoz Sprint. Perhaps the most significant performance of the night came from the French-trained Solow in the Dubai Turf.

The grey stormed clear of last year’s French Derby and Irish Champion Stakes winner The Grey Gatsby to win by four lengths. He looks set to be one of the stars of the season on turf. The French were also celebrating after Dolniya won the Dubai Sheema Classic under Christophe Soumillon. She confirmed her superiority over Flintshire from their recent meeting at Chantilly.

The Americans did not return empty-handed with Secret Circle gaining a well-deserved Group 1 success in the Dubai Golden Shaheen under a confident ride from Victor Espinoza. Although the winning margin was only a head, he never really looked like being caught by Super Jockey.

The UAE Derby was won in spectacular style by Mubtaahij for Mike de Kock and the colt will now head for the Kentucky Derby. He travelled easily throughout and gained revenge on his narrow 2000 Guineas conqueror Maftool who was beaten half a mile from home. The winning margin was eight lengths but it could have been doubled had Soumillon wished.

The form may be questionable but Mubtaahij goes to Kentucky with a major chance and is available at 12-1 with UK bookmakers. He will of course come up against the Baffert duo of American Pharoah and Dortmund who currently dominate the market.

Tamarkuz won the opening Godolphin Mile, giving us a tidy 30-1 treble on our Ante-Post update; Tamarkuz (6-4), Mubtaahij (11-4) and Solow (9-4).
