Doncaster Wednesday Preview

Take Note (8-1) was one of three winners at Leicester on Tuesday for Betcirca followers, extending our winning sequence to six consecutive days on UK racing. Wednesday sees the start of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster and we have selections in the first five races on the card.

Having cashed in on Hugo Palmer’s Only Joking when she bolted up by eight lengths in a Thirsk maiden, I simply have to follow her on her handicap debut in the 2.00 race. She was very impressive that day and Palmer has picked up two Group 3 races with his two-year-olds in recent weeks. With William Buick booked for the ride, she is going to be difficult to beat off 8st 7lb. The likely danger is Richard Hannon’s When Will It End who has twice been beaten by Mark Johnston’s useful Grigolo.

I was sorely tempted to go for Markaz in the 2.30 race after the grey ran such a good race at Goodwood last time. However, the form has been let down repeatedly and he looks to have a stiff task on these terms against Angelic Lord. Tom Dascombe’s colt has been racing in top company and ran on dourly behind Ivawood at Newmarket. He was alongside a smart colt in Belardo at the line and a repeat of that run would be good enough.

The Scarborough Stakes at 3.00 looks like an ideal opportunity for Godolphin to start getting some of their money back for the purchase of Reckless Abandon. He was held back by niggling injuries last season but looked to be returning to his best when a close third to Tropics at Newmarket. I liked the way he battled all the way to the line that day and it will be disappointing if he cannot beat a field largely consisting of handicappers. Mecca’s Angel could be the main threat but she really wants a bit more give in the ground than seems likely.

I would not normally get involved in the Legends race but Michael Hills stands out like a sore thumb on Dansili Dutch. He has not long hung up his riding boots and is riding a filly in form with a perfect draw. David O’Meara is also enjoying a good run so it will be disappointing if the grey does not do the business here.

Finally, I was about to start counting my winnings on Clon Brulee at Sandown last week when he cruised to the front. Unfortunately the weight told in the closing stages and he was reeled in by a couple of lightweights. Ryan Moore will be tracking Godolphin’s second-string Cap O’Rushes and aiming to deliver a decisive late challenge here. I am a big fan of Nabucco but, like Mecca’s Angel, he really wants it softer.

Leicester Tuesday Preview

G Force (11-1) rounded off a brilliant week for Betcirca followers, giving us a profit on five consecutive days of UK racing. All good things must come to an end but we’ll take a look at Tuesday’s Leicester card in the hope of extending the sequence.

My regular readers will know that I am a big fan of Newmarket and Newbury maiden races, especially at the smaller tracks. There are a couple of two-year-olds taking promising Newmarket efforts to the midlands course tomorrow and both look to have winning chances.

Dancetrack was slowly away on his debut and was then hampered when beginning his run. In the circumstances, fifth was about as good as he could have expected behind Tannaaf and he can open his account for Charlie Hills in the 2.50. Several of the top yards are running newcomers here but only Glorious Dubai holds ambitious entries and Dancetrack can put his experience to good use.

My reasoning is almost identical with Housemaker in the 4.50 for Karl Burke. This filly finished a fine second at Newmarket after being collared on her outside by Mehronissa. The winner has been given an entry in next year’s Irish Guineas so clearly trainer Ed Vaughan thinks a lot of her. Once again, there are runners from top stables including two from Sir Michael Stoute’s but I am prepared to take a chance on the favourite.

High Church caught the eye at Salisbury last time out when given an enormous amount of ground to make up. It may be that his rider was under instructions to make sure he got home over the mile and a half but he was never seriously in contention. I would expect James Doyle to be much closer to the pace here and I rate Mustadaam the danger.

The seven-furlong handicap at 4.20 looks wide open but my two against the field are the hat-trick seeking Take Note and the slightly frustrating Secretinthepark. The former won easily at Sandown last time and can make a bold bid from the one stall while Secretinthepark moved up looking like a winner last time out. I expect Richard Hughes to hold him up longer this time and he looks a solid each-way bet.

Finally, Green Door can win the conditions race if he can get away on terms. He was left three or four lengths at Nottingham last time before running on into second. The cheekpieces are fitted here and Jamie Spencer should be able to see off Boston Rocker who is better over further than this five furlongs.

Racing Preview Sept 6th

Triple Chocolate (6-1) ensured another profit on Friday for Betcirca followers. Mistrusting duly landed the odds but our treble hopes were dashed when Master Bond was just run out of it in the sprint.

Saturday’s UK racing action is one of those days when you are left wondering why we have an embarrassment of riches one week and next to nothing the next. Ascot, Haydock and Kempton all feature top quality racing and there is even a Scoop 6 expected to hit a £3.5million jackpot!

Starting at Ascot, Cornrow looks difficult to oppose in the opening race for the Gosden and Buick team. He won impressively at Haydock over a mile and shouldn’t be inconvenienced by dropping back in trip as he raced keenly in front that day. The danger could be Safety Check who was given too much to do at Goodwood last time and is a real seven-furlong specialist.

You could make a case for a dozen different horses in the Heritage Handicap at 3.30. Most of the top yards are represented and Second Step, Montaly and Battersea all have sound claims. I am going to go with Rainbow Rock, one of four runners from Mark Johnston’s stable. I liked the way he stayed on at Goodwood over a mile and a quarter and the 5lb claim of Cam Hardie gives him a winning weight.

Over at Haydock, Chancery has been unlucky in his last couple of outings and could be worth each-way support in the Old Borough Cup. Havana Cooler is a worthy favourite but he lacks a bit of acceleration and the handicapper keeps pushing him up for being placed. I think 9st 10lb will prove too much of a burden while the free-running Nautilus and York winner Glenard are others with chances. The going looks to have gone against bottom weight Epsom Hill who has romped to victories in soft ground and been clobbered by the handicapper here.

Sole Power looks set to try and win over six furlongs for the first time in his career in the big sprint. The going is drying out for him but it must be doubtful whether he is quite as effective over this trip. You could have thrown a large horse blanket over the first ten at York in the Nunthorpe but G Force and Cougar Mountain both looked unlucky. They represent good each-way value against the favourite.

There is also a good card at Kempton with two Group 3 races. Godolphin run three in the September Stakes, any one of which could win. As all three have been off the track for some time, it is anybody’s guess and it could pay to side with our old friend Dandino. He finished second in the American St Leger in his double bid last time out but handles this surface and deserves a victory.

Hugo Palmer has been winning races for fun lately and has a high opinion of Home Of The Brave. He was impressive at Newmarket last time out and should get the better of Maftool in the Sirenia Stakes at 4.10.

Haydock Friday Preview

Rosalie Bonheur (8-1) guaranteed a profit from our three selections on Thursday with Marsh Hawk just beaten in a photograph. I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by the SP return on our winner!

Winners were hard to find on the opening day of the three-day Sprint Cup meeting at Haydock but I’ve been going through the form for Friday in the hope of digging up a winner or two. I will be disappointed if Mistrusting cannot win the 2.30 for Godolphin after her fine debut run behind Malabar.

Mick Channon’s filly has gone on to win a much better class of race at Goodwood and Mistrusting definitely had the winner under pressure before experience told. Her jockey was not hard on her in the closing stages and she should win this unless there is a surprise package among the newcomers.

The sprint handicap at 3.30 has attracted three last-time-out winners with Poyle Vinnie and Triple Chocolate both seeking a hat-trick. I just favour Triple Chocolate after the way he battled to the line to win at Newmarket and the danger could be Free Rein. Ralph Beckett’s runner has been tried at longer trips and the booking of Richard Hughes could be significant.

If that race is tricky, the 4.10 is virtually impossible! Having managed to pick a 1-2 in a five-furlong dash at Chester at the weekend I am going to try my luck with Master Bond here. He looked like completing a hat-trick last time when cruising up to the leaders but did not find the acceleration that was expected. He has a more experienced jockey aboard here and should get a more positive ride.

As you would expect, there are a stack of dangers including Random Success who ran inexplicably badly last time out at Newmarket. Come On Dave ran well in the void race at Epsom the other day and is still in good form but we’ll stick with David O’Meara’s runner.

Our final bet of the day is Madeed in the 4.20. Brian Meehan’s three-year-old has run two cracking races in far better races than this at Goodwood in recent weeks. He was placed at the big festival meeting behind Lyn Valley and then finished second to The Corsican. Paul Hanagan did not enjoy his finest hour on the most recent occasion, bringing him very wide into the straight and then running into a pocket. He can make amends here off the same handicap mark.

Salisbury Thursday Preview

Two winners out of two at Lingfield on Wednesday and a non-runner gave Betcirca followers another winning day. There is some decent turf action on Thursday at Salisbury and Haydock and I’ve picked out three horses to follow.

The nursery at Salisbury is an intriguing contest with all-weather winner Faraajh running under a 6lbs penalty. James Tate has decided to run her before she is reassessed by the handicap after sluicing up by five lengths at Wolverhampton. It can be a risky business backing all-weather form on the turf but she was always travelling best that day and is a definite contender here.

However, I am going to side with the unbeaten Rosalie Bonheur who has already been the subject of some big bets. She only won by a head on her debut at Ripon but a line through the runner-up suggests that she may have been let in lightly on her handicap debut. The front two pulled a long way clear of the third and further improvement is anticipated.

There is a cracking field of fillies set to line up for the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes at 4.20. Having tipped Bronze Maquette at 10-1 at Newbury last time, I am reluctant to let her go unbacked here. She was dropping back to five furlongs that day but the softer ground helped her and she pounced late under a typical Jimmy Fortune drive.

The one that could prove too smart for her here is Richard Hannon’s Marsh Hawk. She made her debut at Newmarket and made all the running to win by seven lengths. That doesn’t happen all that often at HQ so she simply has to be above average.

The feature event at Haydock is the Duke of Lancasters Regiment Cup Handicap at 4.40. The one I like here is Luca Cumani’s Kikonga who is a decent middle distance filly. On her latest start she was attempting to concede 17lbs to the William Haggas-trained Arabian Comet and went down by a length.

Arabian Comet has since been a close second in a Group 3 at Goodwood and a Listed race at York and is now officially rated 99. By my reckoning, that makes Kikonga quite nicely treated off 91 here and I’m further encouraged by the drying ground. She has won with cut in the ground earlier in her career but wouldn’t have enjoyed testing conditions.

Lingfield Wednesday Preview

Last Minute Lisa (tipped at 4-1) saved our bacon at Goodwood on Tuesday after a touch of “seconditis”. An odds-on winner and a non-runner left us all square on the day so we are still in funds going on to Lingfield’s Wednesday card.

The meeting is split between the all-weather and the turf and the pick of the action is the mile and a quarter handicap at 5.05. Paddy Power are offering a generous 5-1 about Shama’s Crown (although I am not sure how long that will last).

She is trained by Jeremy Noseda and ran a great race first time out when chasing up Luca Cumani’s Pleasant Valley. The winner went on to win impressively at Doncaster off a mark of 78 which suggests that Shama’s Crown is something to bet on off a rating of 81. She duly obliged on her second start over an inadequate mile with Ryan Moore bringing her down the centre of the track to win going away.

With Moore claimed for Alex Vino, Kieren Fallon gets to do the steering on this likeable filly and 5-1 looks an each-way steal.

There are two other runners that I like on the card, both two-year-olds. Charming Thought has to be the selection in the opening maiden race in the blue of Godolphin. He ran a fine race on his debut when chasing home Flash Fire. The winner was narrowly beaten in a decent little nursery at Goodwood on Tuesday but Charming Thought looks the sort to improve a few pounds.

He holds an entry in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury later this month so anything less than a win here would be disappointing. Her Majesty The Queen’s Kinematic was probably flattered by her proximity to Ivawood at Sandown but will probably be the biggest threat with the Balding stable in such fine form.

My final selection is Majestic Manner in the maiden at 3.30, trained by William Haggas. Her dam was Majestic Roi who won the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes in her time. Majestic Manner stayed on well at Windsor first time out under a considerate ride from Ryan Moore and will relish the extra furlong she gets on Wednesday.

There are a whole host of well-bred newcomers up against her including two from Sir Michael Stoute’s stable and one from John Gosden’s yard. Providing that there is nothing exceptional among them, Majestic Manner can get off the mark.
