Aston Villa vs Liverpool Sunday 31st March 2013

Hands up – yesterday’s football was a disaster. Sometimes in this game things go wrong and that’s what happened with West Brom and Chelsea. At least Hernandez was left off the subs bench, so it’s stakes back on that one. In today’s game, Liverpool travel to Villa Park, where Aston Villa are in dire need of a victory to take them out of the relegation zone. Whilst they’ve won their previous two games against Reading and QPR, Villa haven’t kept a clean sheet since Christmas. On the other hand, if you looked up “inconsistency” in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of the Liverpool club crest. The only team to have shut out Suarez and co in the Premiership since the start of December has been West Brom, and it’s hard to see Liverpool not getting on the scoresheet. However, in that time, they’ve lost to Southampton, West Brom, Oldham, Stoke…and today’s opponents.

Aston Villa have a star of their own in Christian Benteke, who is in great form, scoring in his last 2 games. Backing both teams to score at 4/6 with Coral or over 2.5 goals at 4/6 with Ladbrokes isn’t going to make you rich, but I’ve seen worse bets. The interesting bet to me is for the Villa victory. At 9/2 with BetVictor, you’re taking a bit of a risk, but if Villa start well and get the home crowd behind them, they could find themselves out of the drop zone this evening. For those of you who’re looking for a bigger payday, Aston Villa to win 2-1 at 18/1 or 3-1 at 50/1 with StanJames seem the most realistic scorelines if they are going to come out on top.

Saturday 30th March 2013 Football Preview

The international break is finally over and we’re back to a packed Saturday afternoon of Premiership football, with a few bets that catch the eye.

In the early kick off Manchester United travel to The Wearside to take on Sunderland. Having taken such a commanding position at the top of the Premier League with the title assured in all but a mathematical sense, you’d be forgiven for expecting an upset here with their focus being on Monday’s FA Cup quarter final replay at Chelsea. Instead, we think that the fringe players or those who currently seem out of favour will be looking to prove a point and put themselves back in Sir Alex Ferguson’s thoughts. Players such as Nani, Anderson and Chicharito will especially be looking to shine, and should easily have enough class to see of an out of form Sunderland, whose last victory was back in the middle of January.

Since then, they’ve lost to Reading, West Brom and QPR and are sitting too close to the drop zone for comfort. Backing over 2.5 goals at 21/20 with BetVictor seems generous, but the real bet in this game is Javier Hernandez to be First Goalscorer at 9/2. Scoring 8 goals in 690 minutes of Premiership football gives him by far the highest goals:minutes ratio of the United squad and he’s a potent striker that scores rather than creates goals. Either Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, or both will be rested for this game, and Chicharito should take the most advanced forward role.

In the 3pm kick-offs, the stand out bet is West Brom to beat West Ham at 13/5 with Bet365. West Brom are an unglamerous side but you can count on them to get the job done in games like this. If this were Liverpool away at West Ham, you wouldn’t be getting 13/5 on the victory, and with West Brom only 1 point behind the Reds, they’ll be looking to leapfrog them with a victory here. West Brom offer a consistency that’s needed for games like this, and whilst West Ham have shown some potential recently and should avoid relegation, they’re the kind of side that WBA should be able to defeat in a close game.

Down on the South Coast, Chelsea travel to Southampton and they will look to keep the pressure on Man City with a victory here. Rafa Benitez is well known for his squad rotation policy and we’d expect a strong Chelsea side to take to the pitch and dispatch a usually leaky Southampton side who flattered themselves with their victory over Liverpool. Odds against is good value, so take the 6/5 with William Hill.

There’s also something to be said for backing Newcastle to beat Man City at a massive 11/1 with Bet365. It’s not a bet to go crazy on, but Newcastle have been playing a lot better football than their recent results show and with a long break since their game against Wigan, the European hangover won’t worry them this time. City’s season is almost over and if they’re slow out of the blocks, Newcastle could capitalise.

Premiership Relegation Tip

Well, this year looks to be one of the closest relegation battles ever. Will Wigan escape again? Will Villa finally lose their premiership status after being one of the founding members? Can QPR perform miracles? Well, the latter doesnt seem possible, but the other two are more likely.

However, we’ve found a right cracking bet for relegation. Sunderland. Sunderland are currently 7/2 to go down. Let’s see why they could well be getting relegated:

Next 5 games –

Home – Manchester United
Away – Chelsea
Away – Newcastle
Home – Everton
Away – Aston Villa

Now, on all known form, they could lose to Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton. Aston Villa could be the nail in the coffin, a real 6 pointer.

Final 3 games:

Home – Stoke
Home – Southampton
Away – Tottenham

Wigan have a game in hand and currently sit on 27 points, Sunderland on 31 points, Villa on 30 points.

Aston Villa’s next 5 games:

Home – Liverpool
Away – Stoke
Home – Fulham
Away – Manchester United
Home – Sunderland

Now, Villa are on a 2 game winning “streak” – but this could and should end with the visit of Liverpool to Villa park. Stoke and Fulham are both winnable games for the Villans, and should they beat Sunderland, Villa could secure safety after these next 5 games.

Wigan, with a game in hand, have the following 5 games:

Home – Norwich
Away – QPR
Away – Manchester City
Home – West Ham
Away – Tottenham

Wigan could easily perform their amazing end of season run that sees them secure premiership status. Norwich, QPR and West Ham are all winnable games for Wigan, should they win those 3 and lose the other 2, they’ll be on 36 points.

If Villa beat Stoke or Fulham they’ll be on 33 points. Then Sunderland comes to Villa park. On the assumption Sunderland don’t pick up any points in the 4 games between now and the Villa trip, they’ll be sitting on 31 points, potentially in the bottom 3. Should Villa win, Villa would move 5 points clear of Sunderland and would give Sunderland a massive task to escape relegation.

This is obviously all based on opinion. Sunderland could quite easily go on a winning streak and win all 5 games, but we don’t think they will. 7/2 (Stanjames) is the price on them getting relegated and with their next 5 games being so difficult compared to those teams below them, we think this is a great interest bet.

I’ve missed out Southampton in all of this because i feel it’s a 3 horse race for the dreaded 18th spot.

World Cup Qualifying – England let us down, but not the Nation.

The night was a success for both Wales and England as both teams won away from home. It was not surprising that England crushed St Marino as the St Marino team is made up of part time football players. The game was a complete goal fest, with England scoring nearly every 10 minutes of the game to end up on eight goals to St Marino’s zero goal count. Well St Marino did score the first England goal! Fare play to the St Marino team they did not give up, they kept on playing and some times played a little to hard as a few hard tackles went in to the England players. England only went 17 minuted in the game without scoring a goal which was quite remarkable for England but not a surprise as they where playing a team that has allot less quality players.

Wales did very well and after going one nil down come back to get a win with two goals to Scotland’s one goal. It was not a good night for us as we had a massive bet running on the correct score results of both the England game and the Scotland and Wales game. The Betcirca team had Wales to win correct score at 1-2 and England to win correct score at 0-9. The odds on this bet was 220/1 at bet365 and we had staked £10. Yes we missed out by one goal…but there will be a next time when England play Montenegro on Tuesday 26th March 2013. We will keep you posted on our football bets for this game, so keep coming back to check the website or twitter.

The Romance of the FA Cup

The romance of the FA Cup continues this weekend when the quarter-finals of England most prestigious domestic tournament gets underway. Manchester City are the 15/8 favourites with Coral to lift the cup and with a quarter-final match-up against Championship side Barnsley, the Citizens are fully expected the progress through to the semi-final draw, which takes place on Sunday evening.

The good news for City fans is that Roberto Mancini has a full strength squad to choose from ahead of their home fixture against Barnsley and with the current Premier League champions looking very unlikely not to defend their league title, the FA Cup is now seen as a main priority.

Manchester United are next best in the FA Cup outright betting at 9/4 with Bet365, but with the 11-time champions having been handed a FA Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea, Sir Alex Ferguson will be keeping his fingers crossed that his side don’t suffer from a Champions League hangover.

Everton are 9/2 with Coral to lift the FA Cup for the first time since 1995 and with a home tie against Premier League strugglers Wigan in the quarter-finals, the Toffeemen are strongly fancied to make the hat for the semi-final draw (Wigan 33-1 with Bet Victor).

Chelsea will be eager to continue their fine record in the FA Cup in recent years. The Blues have lifted the FA Cup a total of four times in the last six seasons and if Rafa Benitez’s men can overcome Manchester United at Old Trafford, and be handed a favourable semi-final draw, the 6/1 available with Bet Victor for Chelsea to be crown FA Cup champions, will look a very big price.

From the three Championship sides still left in this season’s competition, Blackburn and Millwall can be backed at 50/1 with Bet Victory whilst Barnsley are the 200-1 outsiders of the eight teams heading into this weekend’s quarter-finals.

Looking ahead at the quarter-final matches, the tie of the round is definitely between two of the Premier League’s big guns, Manchester United and Chelsea. United are 5/6 with Paddy Power to overcome Chelsea in 90 minutes and with United having only lost one of their last 18 matches in all competitions, the current Premier League leaders can be backed with confidence.

The other factor that points towards a Man United victory is that fact that Chelsea are currently struggling to find their form. The Blues have only won five of their last 11 matches in all competitions and have not tasted victory at Old Trafford since April 2010.

The value bet of the weekend looks to be Blackburn at 11-5 with William Hill away to Millwall. Rovers have had a very indifferent spell in the league recently, but their recent performance against Bolton in the Championship last Saturday suggests that the North-West side are starting to find some sort of form again.

Millwall on the other hand have only won two of their last 10 league games and their recent defeat to Championship strugglers Wolves is definitely a cause of concern.
