Sandown Friday Preview

Betcirca followers have been among the winners this week with four at Epsom on Wednesday and three more at Bath and Beverley on Thursday. Hopefully the good run can continue at a high quality at Sandown on Friday, highlighted by the Group 2 Bet365 Mile.

There is very little between half a dozen of these on official ratings, although it could be argued that Shifting Power is the class act. He chased home Kingman in the Irish Guineas last summer and was only narrowly beaten by Charm Spirit at Chantilly. My worry with him is whether he will be suited by the fast ground and the same certainly applies to Breton Park and Top Notch Tonto.

Bow Creek improved out of all recognition at the end of the season and represents Godolphin but I am siding with Andrew Balding’s Here Comes When. I’ve followed this one since he won at Chester handicap as a three-year-old and he could still be on the upgrade. The Balding horses are in good form and Here Comes When usually runs well fresh.

There is unlikely to be a Shergar in the Bet365 Classic Trial and the withdrawal of Grey Lion has weakened the contest. Commemorative does not have much of a turn of foot so I’d expect him to be prominent but Cape Clear Island has fitness on his side. He was outpaced at Newmarket last week but fairly rattled home and could be good value against the favourite.

Cannock Chase was unbeaten in three starts last season and looks a typical late improver for Sir Michael Stoute. It would be no surprise to see him land a Group 1 this season. He faces Postponed who won the Great Voltigeur for Luca Cumani last season but was behind Cannock Chase at Ascot. Arab Spring showed that Stoute can get them ready to win first time out and I’m prepared to take a chance on the horse’s fitness.

The Esher Cup looks a cracking good handicap to open the card at 1.30 but Purple Rock arrives with a big reputation. He still holds a Derby entry and he would have to win this off a mark of 85 to justify at trip to Epsom. Both Spring Offensive and Tom Hark ran with a great deal of promise in a hot handicap at Musselburgh while Yeenaan was unlucky in running last time out.

Epsom Preview Friday 31st May

The Oaks is the feature race of Epsom’s opening day with Secret Gesture set to go off favourite. Ralph Beckett’s filly has replaced Moth at the head of the market and the midweek rain can only have improved her chances. The rain could also help my each-way selection The Lark so I’m looking forward to the race with optimism.

The meeting opens with a tricky looking contest for the Princess Elizabeth Stakes. I’ve been following Sentaril throughout her career and she started her campaign with a promising run at Goodwood. She was held up by Graham Lee but he found himself trapped on the rails when the pace quickened and he had to wait to deliver his challenge. Sentaril ran on well enough but the winner had first run and held off her late challenge. You can make a case for most of the runners here but I’ll keep faith with Sentaril at 6-1.

I picked out Niceofyoutotellme when the 2.10 was priced up earlier in the week but he is now a non-runner. The money during the week seems to have been for Blue Surf, trained by Amanda Perrett. The four-year-old has not been seen since disappointing in the November Handicap so I can only guess that they have him ready first time out.

The Diomed Stakes is another trappy little race where it is difficult to be too confident. I’m going to side with Gregorian who produced some top class form last season and looked as they he would be sharpened up by his outing at Haydock recently. I respect the claims of Producer who has won all four previous starts at Epsom and that’s a stat that it is difficult to ignore.

I will probably regret overlooking Gabrial. He did this column a good turn when winning the Doncaster Mile but then failed to go through with his effort at Chester. He looked a difficult ride that day and ran like a sidewinder up the straight. If Spencer can preserve his finishing kick he could probably run diagonally across the course and still win but I’m not prepared to take the chance.

Andrew Balding withdrew Here Comes When from the Silver Bowl on account of the firm ground and he has been re-routed to the Listed race at 4.45. His main rival looks to be Hasopop who was behind him at Newbury earlier in the season. He has since won a decent six furlong handicap at Newmarket and is the best part of a stone better off than at Newbury for two lengths.

Strictly speaking, Hasopop should be the selection but Here Comes When won at Chester with a bit in hand. The bookmakers have priced them up at 9-4 and 7-2 and I’m very confident that the race concerns these two. Earlier this week I fancied Heeraat at Beverley and rated Hamza the only danger. I don’t want to make the same mistake again here so I recommend splitting stakes on the pair.

Horse Racing Preview May 25th-26th

Our ante-post advice earlier in the week is looking good with all three original selections cut in price. Sole Power was advised at 7-2 for the Temple Stakes and is now down to 2-1 following the withdrawal of Pearl Secret. Reckless Abandon looks to be his chief rival but I still have respect for the Robert Cowell-trained pair of Spirit Quartz and Kingsgate Native.

Spirit Quartz was done no favours by the draw in the Palace House Stakes and again finds himself on the opposite side of the course to the favourite. He has three lengths to find and may struggle if Tangerine Trees gives Sole Power a nice tow into the race. Kingsgate Native remains slightly enigmatic but Cowell reports both sprinters to be in fine shape. So far the worst of the showers have avoided Haydock so it is still looking good for the fast ground that the favourite loves.

Breton Rock has been taken out of the Silver Bowl and Here Comes When is 5-1 from 7-1 to follow up his Chester win. That still leaves Richard Hannon’s Baltic Knight and I am going to have a saver on this promising colt. He beat Here Comes When at Newbury and is better off at the weights and the form received another boost when the third horse won a nice handicap at Newmarket on Saturday. His run behind Dundonell was a good one and he will be a big danger if this race does not come too quickly.

The Irish 2000 Guineas has been turned on its head by a flood of money for Chester Dee Stakes winner Magician. Many observers felt that he had earned a crack at the Epsom Derby with that win but he has apparently been showing so much speed at home that he is regarded as the stable number one here. That is quite an honour with a Breeders’ Cup winner and two horses that were beaten only three or four lengths in the French Guineas to consider.

If you are on Magician at 14-1 I wish you luck but he no longer represents value at 5-2. The one that interests me is Flying The Flag at 33-1 with Stan James. The French Guineas was something of a farce with the horses finishing in a heap but Flying The Flag was arguably the unluckiest of the lot. He trailed the entire field turning in but made up an enormous amount of ground. My biggest worry is that he will be used as a pacemaker as he was last season but at 33-1 I’m prepared to take a punt.

Just The Judge is on course for the 1000 Guineas and I’m optimistic that she can give Charlie Hills his first classic success. Moth looks almost certain to be diverted to the Oaks next week and I think Snow Queen could emerge as the biggest danger. She ran well at Newmarket without ever threatening the leaders and should not be far behind Just The Judge.

Haydock And Curragh Ante-Post Preview

This weekend’s racing at Haydock features two top quality betting races in the Temple Stakes and the Betfred Silver Bowl. Over at the Curragh there is classic action with the Irish 2000 Guineas on Saturday and the 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

Last year’s Temple Stakes was won in a course record time by Roger Charlton’s Bated Breath from the fast finishing Sole Power. The latter is hoping to go one place better this year after winning impressively at Newmarket last time out. Not surprisingly he has been put up the 7-2 ante-post favourite and he is expected to be hard to beat. His latest victory followed two solid efforts at Meydan. He had several of Saturday’s rivals behind him at Newmarket including the Robert Cowell-trained pair Kingsgate Native (2nd) and Spirit Quartz (5th). There did not seem to be any real excuse for either that day although Spirit Quartz may have been slightly inconvenienced by the draw.

The Silver Bowl has been won by some cracking good three-year-olds down the years and another strong field is set to turn out this weekend. Whatever the result on Saturday, this race is usually a good guide to the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and the form is always worth following. The one to be on early in the week here is Andrew Balding’s Here Comes When who did us a favour when winning at Chester recently. He beat Breton Rock with a little up his sleeve and can beat the same horse on only 2lb worse terms. Richard Hannon’s Baltic Knight could be a danger if allowed to take his chance after chasing home the smart Dundonnell last Saturday. He beat Here Comes When at Newbury by a neck and is 7lb better off at the weights.

The Irish 2000 Guineas on Saturday looks wide open with several of the also-rans from the Newmarket Guineas set to turn out again. It will be interesting to see how the form of those beaten so convincingly by Dawn Approach stands up. With Aidan O’Brien having eight of the nineteen runners it is unwise to have a bet until running plans are made known.

O’Brien has also thrown a spanner in the works for the 1000 Guineas on Sunday by declaring one-time Oaks favourite Moth. However, I am prepared to stick with the Charlie Hills-trained Just The Judge to gain compensation. She looked to have done everything right at Newmarket and was unlucky to be run out of it close home. The Guineas form is not always confirmed at the Curragh but I’m prepared to take a chance at the opening quote of 100-30. Those odds can only shorten if Moth is diverted to Epsom.

Chester Preview May 9th

The opening day of the Chester May meeting started with the three worst drawn horses being withdrawn from the first race. The official reasons were a knocked joint, not eaten up and the going. Now, call me cynical but isn’t it time that Chester reviewed the maximum number of runners for their races over sprint distances? If trainers are viewing it as a complete waste of time running a horse with a high draw then it makes sense to reduce the maximum field to 12 and save everyone’s time and money.

The Chester Cup was run at an unusually pedestrian pace but there appeared to be no excuses for Countrywide Flame. He was well placed throughout and looked certain to be in the frame until the last fifty yards. I would imagine that he will now be given a well earned rest and prepared for another tilt at the Champion Hurdle 2014. The best performance of the day came from Banoffee in the Cheshire Oaks, cutting through the pack on the inside rail and winning cosily. Connections now face the prospect of stumping up the cash to enter her for the Epsom Oaks but that looks the most logical step, especially after a bunch finish to the 1000 Guineas last weekend.

Day 2 of Chester gives Richard Fahey a golden opportunity to add to his Cup gains when he saddles Gabrial for the Huxley Stakes. He looked as good as ever when sprinting clear to win the Doncaster Mile, although he clearly retains his inability to run in a straight line. Fallon is claimed to ride Danadana for Luca Cumani and that rival is respected but Jamie Spencer has won on Gabrial in the past and knows what to expect. If you can get any of the 3-1 about Gabrial that seems a fair price in a decent little race.

The Boodles Diamond Handicap features a return clash for Here Comes When and Ribaat, second and fourth in a decent race at Newbury last time. Both horses ran far too freely for their own good but I was impressed by the way Here Comes When quickened up going to the line and he can confirm the placings. The one stall may mean he sees plenty of daylight but I hope his jockey lets him run up front rather than dropping him in behind horses.

The Chester Vase looks unlikely to have a big impact on the ante-post market for the Epsom Derby but it will be interesting to see Ruler of the World lining up for Aidan O’Brien. Feel Like Dancing and Havana Beat should be good enough to give him a decent test but this looks like a race to watch rather than invest in.
