NRL Telstra Premiership Round Eight Preview

NRL Telstra Premiership Round Eight Preview:

Round 7 our picks went out the window, calling 2 of 7. Round 8 is ANZAC round which means uniforms that pay tribute to the troops and mouth watering fixtures.

Canterbury Bulldogs v Wests Tigers

Bulldogs – $1.65

Tigers – $2.15

Round eight opens at ANZ stadium hosting the Bulldogs and Tigers. The Bulldogs come off a win after finally getting on top of Manly late in the game and the Tigers come off an embarrasing loss after going 22-0 up then leaking 30 unanswered points to the Raiders. For the Dogs Josh Morris, Kasiano and Tim Browne return and for the Tigers big red Keith Galloway couldn’t recover from his shoulder injury. The Tigers look the more dangerous out of the two sides especially with the likes of Tedesco and Brooks running hot but the Bulldogs bring a more ruggered approach to the game and will play for close to 80 minutes with more depth on the bench. Expect a high scoring game but the Doggies will walk away with the spoils, Bulldogs 13+

New Zealand Warriors v Gold Coast Titans

Warriors – $1.33

Titans – $3.10

Mt Smart plays host to the Warriors and Titans. Both teams sitting just outside the top 8, equal on competition points but their for / against record lets them down. For the Warriors Konrad Hurrell is dropped, David Fusitu’a replaces him whilst Sam Rapira returns along with debutant Raymond Faitala-Mariner. The Titans lose Dave Taylor to suspension, Agnatius Paasi and Ryan Simpkins to injury but gain Nate Myles. The Warriors were guilty last round of poor ruck defense and were made to pay. They also made too many errors which the Cowboys were able to capitalise on, tidying these areas up is essential. The Titans, slow starters but put the Panthers away well. The Warriors at home are tough to beat and will be notice so expect the Warriors to come out  firing, they need to look after Falloon or we’ll see the Titans replicate the Cowboys display. It’ll be a good battle, expect the Warriors to get an early lead and hold on, Warriors 1-12.

Newcastle Knights v Queensland Cowboys

Knights – $2.30

Cowboys – $1.57

Hunter stadium plays host to a mouth watering fixture between the Knights and Cowboys. The Knights have already but the Cowboys to the sword in round 2, both teams unchanged from last round. Expect to see some fire works here the Cowboys will certainly be out for revenge for the loss earlier in the season. The Knights will need to do a better job around the ruck than the Warriors if they want to keep Granville quiet who will be confident around some big men. Both packs boast size and the Cowboys pack is seen as the form pack right now so expect to see the likes the Snowden, Jeremy Smith, Tariq and Korbin Sims going hammer and tonge to try and upset the Cowboys pack. The Knights will get up, Knights 1-12.

Sydney City Roosters v St George Illawarra Dragons

Roosters – $1.45

Dragons – $2.60

The Roosters host the Dragons at Allianz. The Roosters are in trouble, 3 losses in a row and potentially a 4th against a Dragons side who is on a run of 5 wins. For the Roosters Waerea-Hargreave’s is out and Sam Moa replaces him, the Dragons are unchanged. The Dragons defense has been the difference in their run on wins, big hits around the ground and grinding goal line heroics. The halves match up between Mitchell Pearce and Benji Marshall should provide some spark in the game with both playing good footy. The Roosters will throw everything they have at Dragons and the Dragons will hold, expect some big hits and a expansive game from both. Dragons defense will win the day, Dragons by 1-12.

Melbourne Storm v Manly Sea Eagles

Sea Eagles – $3.70

AAMI hosts the Storm and Sea Eagles. The Storm sit pretty on top of the table as a proud Manly outfit continue to camp at the very bottom. It doens’t get any better for Manly, losing Jamie Lyon once again to injury however Keiran Foran is back. The Storm running hot are unchanged. There isn’t much to say about this game other than Manly are in for a drubbing, expect to see the regulars like Cronk and Smith running the ship behind the big boys. Storm 13+

Brisbane Broncos v Parramatta Eels

Broncos – $1.33

Eels – $3.10

The Broncos host the Eels at Suncorp Stadium. The Broncos licking their wounds after a physical loss to the Dragons last round seeing Hodges out with injury again, Alex Glenn has not recovered from his facial injuries which puts Thaiday back into the 2nd row and Adam Blair starting at prop. For the Eels who are still blowing hot and cold this season but managed to put away the Knight last round make a few changes with Reece Robinson to fullback, Hopoate to centre and Folau to the wing. On top of good defense the Broncos were their own worst enemy against the Dragons and will be looking to make amends, expect to see Hunt, Milford and Marantra make a lot of metres and breaks behind the big runs from the pack. The Eels will be up for a scrap but their form is too inconsistent and if they want to stand a chance it they better be blowing hot. The Broncos will play the 80 minutes and win easy, Broncos by 13+

Penrith Panthers v Cronulla Sharks

Panthers – $2.15

Sharks – $1.65

The Panthers play host to the Sharks at Pepper Stadium. The Panthers were on the end of a 30 point drubbing round 7 courtesy of the Titans and the Sharks bullied the Rabbitohs to take a hard grind win. For the Panthers injuries have struck with Josh Mansour and Brent Kit out, repacing them is George Jennings and Sam Anderson. The Sharks get back Gallen. The Sharks really stepped up last weekend round against the Rabbitohs and will look to continue that form, the Panthers will provide the Sharks with a good battle but there isn’t much to seperate the teams man for man. Going off form the Sharks will win this arm wrestle by 1-12.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Canberra Raiders

Rabbitohs – $1.27

Raiders – $3.50

The Rabbitohs and Raiders close the ANZAC round clashes at Barlow park. The Rabbitohs will be keen to get their season back on track after losing 2 game on the trot and the Raiders will look to continue their attacking form after putting 30 unanswered points on the Tigers but leaking 22 early. The Rabbitohs are unchanged but the Raiders say goodbye to Dane Tilse who has signed on with Hull KR in the UK. Paul Vaughan shifts to the front row and Fensom is back at lock. The Raiders will hold their own up front but can’t afford to leak points early against a desperate Rabbitohs side. The Rabbitohs are vulnerable in the halves with Reynolds and Sutton still missing so expect to see the Raiders put pressure on the youngsters McInnes and Keary. Its a tough game for the Rabbitohs to get back on track but we think this will be the game they return. Rabbitohs to take it at the death, 1-12.

NRL Telstra Premiership Round Seven Preview

NRL Telstra Premiership Round Seven Preview:

Round 6 we picked 7 of the 8 winners opting for the Raiders to sneak past the Storm which they unfortunately did not do. This round has some exciting fixtures Friday to Monday, we also see Thurston celebrate his 250th NRL game, as if the Cowboys needed more incentive. Jamie Lyon returns from injury to the Sea Eagles, can he help get their season back on track? Check out the odds, predictions, and teamlists for NRL Telstra Premiership Round Seven.

Canterbury Bulldogs v Manly Sea Eagles

Bulldogs – $1.75

Sea Eagles – $2.00

The Bulldogs coming off a drubbing courtesy of the Dragons in round 6 host bottom of the table Sea Eagles who are in all sorts of strife on and off the field. For the Doggies, Josh Reynolds and Tim Browne are starting which pushes Moses Mbye and Antonio Kaufusi to the bench. Jamie Lyon returns for Manly, this pushes Brayden Wiliame out to the wing. The battle between the halves has an exciting prospect about it; both halve pairs have faced disruptions during the season, Cherry-Evans and Foran more so but have kept a workmanlike approach making it count when the opportunities arise. Reynolds and Hodkinson are a great combination when their pack is dominant but struggle more so than their counterparts when things aren’t going their way.  Both teams suffering from injuries and suspensions so expect a tight battle with some big collisions, Sea Eagles by 1-12.

St George Illawarra Dragons v Brisbane Broncos

Dragons – $2.15

Broncos – $1.65

Certainly a mouth watering fixture, Dragons sitting in 3rd and the Broncos top, both teams showing good form. The Dragons make one change with Will Matthews replacing suspended  Tyson Frizzell. The Broncos see Captain Justin Hodges return from injury which shifts Daley Copley out to the wing and Corey Oates to the bench. Both teams boast good defense so far which means the game is going to tight, points are going to be taken when on offer so it’s vital that both sides keep their discipline in check. It’ll be very tight and confrontational but the Broncos have the goods across the park, Broncos by 1-12.

Gold Coast Titans v Penrith Panthers

Titans – $1.90

Panthers – $1.85

The Titans host the Panthers at CBUS stadium, both teams coming off good round six wins. For the hosts Beau Falloon returns from suspension replacing Pettybourne who is suspended. Kierran Moseley drops to the bench. The Panthers debut Roberts Jennings at centre, coming in for Jamal Idris who is out for the season. It’s hard to say which team has the advantage in this fixture, the Titans certainly have the more ready 13 but the Panthers have more depth on the bench with experience and impact players. It’ll be a banger but the Panthers are going to walk away with it, Panthers by 1-12

North Queensland Cowboys v New Zealand Warriors

Cowboys – $1.37

Warriors – $2.90

The Cowboys host the Warriors at 1300 Smiles Stadium. The Cowboys celebrating Thurstons 250th NRL game. Both sides are unchanged for this game rewarding both line ups after round 6 wins, both are guilty of taking too long to get going but at the same time when they’re in gear they’re very hard to stop. The Cowboys pack has been rampant and Thurston has been feeding off it, currently sitting second in the league for line and try and line-break assists. For the Warriors, Johnson and Townsend have the knack of doing the unexpected and if their pack is struggling they’ll need to look to their backs to make some meters. For me, the Cowboys are looking awesome and will be way to good at home. Cowboys 13+

Melbourne Storm v Sydney City Roosters

Storm – $1.97

Roosters – $1.77

The Storm sits nicely in 2nd place host the 6th placed Roosters who are on a possible 3 game losing streak. For the Storm they’ve made no changes. The Roosters bring Jake Friend in to make his first start pushing Matt McIlwrick to the bench. Sam Moa is suspended so Dylan Napa starts and Sio Siua Taukeiaho will start ahead of Isaac Liu so Lagi Setu warms the bench. The Roosters need to get their season back on track but it’ll be a tough ask at AAMI against a big, skilled, and mobile pack orchestrated by Cronk and Smith. The Roosters inclusion of Friend into the run on side is vital if they want to battle the experience Smith brings. The packs will battle all night and it’ll be crucial to take the points on offer. Both teams boast outside backs that are renowned for defusing bombs and having gas to burn so each player will need to ensure their pass is going to find the right man. It’ll be a very tight affair, full time it’ll be even, Storm to take it in golden point.

Wests Tigers v Canberra Raiders

Tigers – $1.40

Raiders – $2.80

The Tigers return home to Leichhardt oval hosting the Canberra Raiders, both sides losing last week. For the Tigers they sit 8th and are unchanged. The Raiders are 2 points ahead of cellar dwellers Manly and have confirmed Fensom to start at lock even though he was an injury concern last round. On form both sides are relatively even, the Tigers pack should hold the advantage on experience and mobility. Tedesco and Brooks will be looking to cause trouble and on the back of a dominant pack these two are very creative and are not afraid to try things. Tigers 13+

Newcastle Knights v Parramatta Eels

Knights – $1.42

Eels – $2.70

The Knights host the Eels at Hunter Stadium with both sides on the verge of 3 losses in a row. Both sides have big aggressive packs and dangerous running backs with ball in hand, both have opted to keep the same run on 13 as last round. It’s crucial that discipline is kept in check as both teams have quality kickers who can take the points or carve off meters with a touch finder. Expect to see some fireworks with the likes of Watmough, Jeremy Smith, Sandow, and the Sims brothers to name a few stirring the pot with any chance they get. Whilst the Knights are on a 2 game losing streak, they haven’t looked bad in their loses where the Eels have been blowing really hot or freezing. Knights to run away with it in the last 20, Knights 13+

Cronulla Sharks v South Sydney Rabbitohs

Sharks – $2.15

Rabbitohs – $1.65

The Sharks with two wins on the trot host a Rabbitohs outfit blown away by the Cowboys last round at Remondis. The Sharks have certainly turned around their season with some good performances but have paid the price for some ill discipline and injuries ruling out the Fifita brothers. The Rabbitohs look a little lost without Reynolds and Sutton both out which means Glenn Stewart retains the five-eight role. It’ll be crucial for the Rabbitohs big men to put pressure on the Sharks halves, they’re young and inexperienced but with time these two aren’t afraid to take their chances and lead their big men around the park. It’ll be a very physical battle and Gallen has shown that he’ll take the points on offer so discipline in crucial for the Bunnies and Sharks likewise with Goodwin a decent boot. The Sharks at home, looking more creative and better for a grinding game will take this at the death, Sharks 1-12.

Both teams losing last round, the Eels blowing hot and cold early into the season with the Titans sitting 2nd to last courtesy of the Sea Eagles having a shocker of a 2015 so far. Eels are moving Reece Robinson back to the wing and Dave Gower onto the bench but the Titans are starting big man Dave Taylor which puts Pettybourne on the bench. Depending on what Eels side turns up we could see a big win from the Eels or we’ll get a low scoring scrap what the Titans will take. Titans by 1-12.

New Zealand Warriors v Wests Tigers

Warriors – $1.42

Tigers $2.70

The Warriors return home after being beaten comprehensively by the Storm, and the Tigers on a roll after doing the same to the Eels last round. For the Warriors their only change is Albert Vete for Dom Peyroux, Hurrell retains his spot after a poor comeback from injury. Tigers are unchanged. The Warriors must remain focused around completing the tackle and marking up as the likes of Farah, Halatau and co will be looking to expose the Warriors big men to gain valuable meters. Warriors at home are tough, it’ll be tight, but Warriors by 1-12.

Penrith Panters v Manly Sea Eagles

Panthers – $1.47

Sea Eagles – $2.55

Pepper Stadium hosts the Panthers and Sea Eagles. Manly sitting at the bottom of the competition, racked by injuries and player speculation which doesn’t help with losing again last round to the Raiders.. Penrith coming off a drubbing courtesy of the Cowboys have had mixed season so far. Dean Whare is out with injury which places Idris back at centre with Waqa Blake. Big man Sika Manu is starting in the second row. No changes for the Sea Eagles, Lyon and Matai still injured. Even though the Panthers looked average last weekend, Manly have some real issues at the moment, Panthers 13+.

Canberra Raiders v Melbourne Storm

Raiders – $2.45

Storm – $1.50

Both sides coming off very good wins in round 5 meet at GIO stadium. For the Raiders Jordan Rapana is serving a suspension which brings in Jeremy Hawkins. The Storm only change is losing Billy Slater for four weeks after a scan revealed his injured shoulder was worse than first thought. Expect to see Kurt Mann move to fullback. The hosts will look to expose and put a lot of pressure on whoever fills Billy’s spot. Whilst this could be a weakness for the Storm the Raiders need to ensure Cronk, Harris, and Smith are looked after on attack if they want to stay in the game. Should be an exciting fixture, for me Billy is a crucial loss for the Storm, Raiders by 1-12.

St George Illawarra Dragons v Canterbury Bulldogs

Dragons – $1.87

The Dragons are unchanged whilst the Doggies have lost James Graham, Dave Klemmer, and Sam Kasiano to suspension. Brett Morris and Tim Lafai are out with injuries. The Dragons have not scored a lot of points so far this season but they have shown a lot of heart on defense. Whilst the Bulldogs do still have playmakers on the pitch the players absent will make it an uphill batter.  Dragons by 1-12.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v North Queensland Cowboys

Rabbitohs – $1.70

Cowboys $2.05

After a tight win under controversial circumstances the Rabbitohs come into round six top of the table and the Cowboys lingering in the bottom half but looking to make it 3 wins in a row. The Rabbitohs lost Adam Reynolds last week which brings John Sutton into the halves and big George Burgess is cleared to play after successfully challenging his dangerous contact charge. Cowboys unchanged. Thurston is playing some good rugby league right now behind a charging pack, the Rabbitohs need to win the contact and keep Thurston quiet. We predict a bruising encounter which should provide a lot of entertainment, match of the round material. Cowboys big men to be the difference, Cowboys by 1-12.

Gold Coast Titan v Brisbane Broncos

Titans $2.40

Broncos $1.52

Both teams coming off hard fought wins in round 4, the Broncos appearing to be the stronger looking side in the campaign so far. Brisbane stalwart Justin Hodges is out with a hamstring issue however Dale Copley will have plenty of support as he fills he place. Nate Myles leads his team with an impressive forward pack support in Dave Taylor and Greg Bird; we should see a very even match with both teams squaring up across the park. The Titans need to clean their discipline up if they want to stay in the match as Corey Parker is sure from anywhere inside his range. Broncos 1-12.

Manly Sea Eagles v Canberra Raiders

Sea Eagles $1.55

Raiders $2.35

The Raiders are on a run of 3 consecutive defeats and the Sea Eagles a grinding win from round 4. The Sea Eagles season marred by speculation of player movement and injuries to key personnel however halves Cherry-Evans and Foran are keeping the wheels rolling. Without Jamie Lyon the Sea Eagles tend to struggle in the goal kicking department so they will focus on crossing the white wash rather than taking points. The Raiders were woeful last weekend and the Sea Eagles are trying to get back on board so expect to see a close game. Sea Eagles to pull through 1-12.

Sydney City Roosters v Cronulla Sharks

Roosters $1.16

Sharks $4.75

Two confrontational packs with the likes of Paul Gallen, Wade Graham, Michael Ennis & the Fifita brothers up against Aidan Guerra, Boyd Cordner, Sam Moa & Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. Winning the collision and the hard yards will decide this match, expect fireworks and some red mst.

For the Roosters halves Maloney and Pearce are in fine form and with a pack going forward will put many points on any team. For the Sharks Gallen and Ennis will be crucial to keeping a lid on the game and their workman like play could be key to keeping the Sharks alive. Aslong as the Roosters keep their foot on the pedal and don’t blow over when niggled we should see the Roosters 13+

Parramatta Eels v Wests Tigers

Eels $1.75

Tigers $2.00

Both teams looking in good form and not afraid to run the ball, an Easter Monday fixture on the cards has an exciting prospect to it.

For the Eels an unexpected and impressive win against the Roosters last weekend will see them full of confidence to go back to back. The Tigers seeing the return of Aaron Woods and Dene Halatua from injury. Tigers halfback Luke Brooks had a good game last week and did look confident, his consistency is what often plagues the young half. Hopefully his form continues as this would certainly add fuel to a juicy fixture. The Eels confidence and form should carry through to this fixture to shut out the Tigers, Eels 1-12.

Melbourne Storm v New Zealand Warriors

Storm $1.42

Warriors $2.70

The Storm host the Warriors at AAMI Park, traditionally the Warriors are the Storms bogey team and with returning son Ryan Hoffman now with the Warriors should add more excitement to this fixture. For the Warriors they need to be playing for 80 minutes, last week they were guilty of leaking tries early on and poor kick return defense. Johnson sparked midway through the game but he and Townsend need to complement each other and control their games, their pack will charge all night but they also need to control the urge to offload early in the set. Melbourne will look at Cronk and Smith to control play and much like the Warriors the Storm pack will be running hard to put Cronk and Smith on the front foot where they’re most dangerous. Storm offer a more complete game, it will be tight but the Storm will take it by 1-12.

Penrith Panthers v North Queensland Cowboys

Panthers $1.50

Cowboys $2.45

Panthers are on a two game losing streak and come up against a Cowboys who look to have found some good form. The Cowboys will look to their pack again to lead the charge after impressive displays this year putting the likes of Thurston, Coote, and Morgan on the front foot to do some damage. The Panthers will need to muscle up against this hard running Cowboys outfit and the return of James Segeyaro should help with the hooker full of energy and exciting runs surely to catch the Cowboys pack napping. Whare and Idris combination should provide some supremacy for the Panthers but ultimately the Cowboys form and the packs confidence looks too good for this fixture. Cowboys 1-12

The matched opened with the Rabbitohs scoring through Joel Reddy (8th) on the receiving end of slick passing through the line. The Eels replied 6 minutes later courtesy of John Folau who took a short pass 10 out to step and crash through defenders (14th).  Reynolds was done for decent towards the pocket referee and Sandow converted the penalty however he redeemed himself shortly after putting up a difficult bomb which was blundered by the Eels and Grensmuhl pounced for his first (34th). On the stroke of half time a barn storming run 10 out from John Folau carrying 3 Rabbitohs with him over the line saw him pick up his second try of the night (39th). The Eels were at it again early in the second half with some slick hands passing through the line giving Reece Robinson the advantage over his inside defense and he kicked into 2nd gear to get around a diving Inglis for the try (42nd). The Premiers under the pump in the second half, taking nearly 20 minutes to get substantial possession and a try scoring opportunity. Wests Tigers (24) v (25) Canterbury Bulldogs

ANZ Stadium hosted the Tigers and Bulldogs, a match full of expectation. The Tigers first out of the blocks with a try inside 4 minutes when Kyle Lovett slipped through a yawning Bulldogs defensive line. The Doggies hit back after some well constructed plays through the middle to have Frank Prichard bulldoze close to the line and make an offload millimeters from the ground to put Curtis Rona over (15th).  Both team squandering chances for the remainder of the half. The Tigers charged into the second 40 much like the first scoring early with Luke Brooks blocking a poor grubber into the Tigers half, he scooped up the deflection running 50 metres to dot down (45th). 3 minutes later some slick running from dummy half put the Tigers ahead of the advantage line and a tactical grubber into space bounced favorably into Tedescos’ hands only having to run over the line to dot down (48th). Brooks was at it again from dummy half putting through a pin point grubber for Tedesco to run onto making it his second for the night (55th). With the gap widening the Doggies managed to apply some pressure to the Tigers with their big men running hard, Lichaa found himself over the try line after beating some tired tackles close to the line (58th). Curtis Rona added to his tally 8 minutes later after some excellent dummy pass skills courtesy of Kasiano to feed an open Rona (66th). The hosts were strongest early on with a try to Chris Houston (7th) after receiving a short ball 5 out showing great balance and footwork for a big man to dot down. A dummy half run catching the Panthers defenders napping extended the score (14th) courtesy of Clydsdale.  Mounting pressure was taking its toll on the Panthers with well worked second man play seeing Gidley take the contact and bounce out of the tackle to crash over for the Knights 3rd (17th). After so much pressure the Panthers finally got a real attacking opportunity and cashed in through slick passing from the left hand attack feeding Mansour who gracefully stepped inside his opposite to dot down (23rd). Two missed opportunities from the Panthers saw them go into half 14 points down. Uate was the next man on the board with the Knights line drawing the defense to lead to an overlap, Uate dotting down (52nd). The Panthers hitting back, attacking the right hand defense and only to spin it back the other way and Moylan hitting a gap 20 out to dot down (65th). The opening 20 was dull as both sides were guilty of poor execution. Dave Taylor eventually crashing over after some ugly play 10 out from both sides losing possession, Taylor catching out defenders not playing the whistle (20th). The Sharks were quick to reply, Valentine Holmes getting the luck of the bounce with a dodgy grubber falling into his hands and he had little work to do beating his opposite on the outside (26th). Another Sharks try was on the board after the Sharks dissected the Titans up through the middle with Ennis running support to dot down under the posts (32nd). James Roberts claimed a try just inside of halftime with the Sharks defense ball watching a grubber hoping it would go out (41st). A pinpoint kick 20 out from Robson into the in-goal area was casually claimed by Holmes getting his second (47th). Nate Myles turned playmaker with a short burst 10 out and a beautiful short ball to Sezer on his shoulder seeing Sezer crash over (59th). Michael Gordon extended the Sharks lead with two penalties (65th & 72nd) after the Titans ill discipline in the tackle cost them. The four point lead evaporated with a soft pass on attack being intercepted by James Roberts who dotted down to even it up, Sezer converting to give the Titans the win.

Hiku nearly opening the Sea Eagles account early into the half with a heroic dive for the corner only to plant the ball out of play but with more possession midway into the second the Eagles finally dotting down through a Keiran Foran grubber cleaned up by Brayden Willame (58th). Off the ball infringement from Luke Burgess 30 out cost the Sea Eagles another 2 points with Widdop slotting the conversion (69th). Sydney Roosters (34) v (6) Canberra Raiders

The Roosters hosting the Canberra Raiders at ALLIANZ Stadium. The hosts hot favorites going into the match, they did not disappoint the home crowd. Shaun Kenny-Dowall opened the scoring for the hosts after the Rooster line fed a series of passes gaining the advantage line and Pearce throwing a superb cut out pass to Kenny-Dowall who dotted down in the corner (4th). Tuivasa-Sheck extended the lead after he found a gaping hole in the defense, easing past the last man to score (10th). The Roosters continuing to make metres and gain ascendency found them over again after Blake Ferguson ran a great angle from 10 out, dummying, and the defence falling off gifted Ferguson an easy try (27th). Minutes out from half time an well constructed Raiders attack was finished off with a soft grubber which bounced favorably for Croker who beat the man and dotted down to open the Raiders account. That was all she wrote for the Raiders with the Roosters scoring 3 minutes into the second half, the Raiders defense flat footed and falling for the support runners allowing Jennings to walse over (43rd). Daniel Tupou was next on the board through air supremecy, easily defusing a bomb and crashing over the line (48th). Some smooth footwork from Jennings put him outside of his opposite and he fed Tupou who galloped up the line, feeding Maloney on his inside who ran away to close the game out (69th)

North Queensland Cowboys (18) v (17) Melbourne Storm

Townsville hosted the final game of the round with the Cowboys facing the Melbourne Storm. The Storm were first to strike with a well constructed move out left seeing Kurt Mann take the overlap and crash through the last man (6th). The Cowboys were hot on a reply with hard yards up the middle and Thurston throwing a ranging cut out pass to Winterstein with the overlap, easily stepping inside to dive over (12th). Koroibete difussed a high bomb will ease and caught the attacking Cowboys off guard as he charged through napping defenders to race 90 meters and score (27th). The Storm hot on attack were over the line again as Kafusi was on the end a well timed shortball 10 out to ease through the defense (34th). Midway through the second half some slick cut out passing and dynamic running from the Cowboys left side attack opened the Storm defence up, Winterstein on the end of it all picking up his second (60th). With 10 to go Cooper Cronk slotted a field goal to put the Storm 7 points ahead (70th). The Cowboys endured and attacked the Storm line searching for a try, catching an overlap out right with Matthew Wright dotting down and Thurston converting to put the Cowboys a point behind (77th). With no pressure 40 out Thurston hit a field goal to put the game into extra time (79th). Sustain pressure into extra time and Thurston was at it again, hitting a similar field goal to give the Cowboys and extra time win (84th).

Rugby League: NRL Season Preview

The NRL gets underway on Thursday and we’ve made your tips and your fantasy team selection easy with our comprehensive team by team guide.

See details of every side’s chances and the players that are crucial to their chances below.  Odds are taken from Sportsbet Australia.

Brisbane Broncos

Ins: Adam Blair (Tigers), Darius Boyd (Knights), Anthony Milford (Raiders), Travis Waddell (Knights), Mitch Garbutt (Storm), Greg Eden (Hull KR), James Gavet (Tigers), Matt Parcell

Outs: Ben Barba (Sharks), Josh Hoffman (Titans), Ben Hannant (Cowboys), Martin Kennedy (Roosters), Jake Granville (Cowboys), David Hala (Titans)

The player to watch: Anthony Milford’s transition to Brisbane, and into the number 6 jersey, will make for interesting when the 2015 season kicks off.  The nimble runner is expected to do what Ben Barba couldn’t do in the jersey and spark the Bronco’s attacking game week after week.

The youngster to watch: Kodi Nikorima is a name well known to followers of the NRL Nines.  The youngster has made a name for himself in the reduced format thanks to his fleet footwork and clever rugby league mind.  He’ll grab a utility spot on Brisbane’s interchange for their opener and should make waves all year.

The odds: $11.00

Last Year: Eighth (elimination finalist)

This Year: Uncle Wayne and his fragile frame should ensure the Broncos make the top 8 again this year.  He’s recruited well (including his favourites), and he knows the NRL game better than most, we’re thinking 6th on the back of an awesome Suncorp Friday night record.

Canterbury Bulldogs

Ins: Brett Morris (Dragons), Michael Lichaa (Sharks), Curtis Rona (Cowboys), Antonio Kaufusi (Huddersfield)

Outs: Reni Maitua (Featherstone), Michael Ennis (Sharks), Dale Finucane (Storm), Mitch Brown (Sharks), Krisnan Inu (Stade Francais), Lachlan Burr (Titans), John Sila (Tigers)

The player to watch: Josh Jackson was the most improved player in the competition last year (in our view).  He’s gone from solid ball running forward with little responsibility, to creative spark on the right hand edge where all of the Bulldogs plays run (after James Graham takes on the line).  His test experience will be crucial in helping the talented but enigmatic Bulldogs pack flourish in 2015.

The youngster to watch: Former Sharks man Michael Lichaa looks set to step straight into Michael Ennis boots as replacement hooker, despite Moses Mbye being used in the grand final.  The Junior Kangaroos reps has always been tipped for big things and this could be his year to shine.

The odds: $7.50

Last Year: Seventh (finalist)

This Year: The beaten finalists have lost one inspirational captain but gained another.  Tough as nails English import James Graham replaces Mick Ennis for 2015 in the role in a move that will only strengthen the Doggies (and improve their gamesmanship…slightly).  We think they’ll finish 4-8 this year.

Canberra Raiders

Ins: Blake Austin (Tigers), Sisa Waqa (Storm), Frank-Paul Nu’uausala (Roosters), Iosia Soliola (St Helens), Josh Hodgson (Hull KR), Sam Williams (Catalans), Rhys Kennedy (Storm)

Outs: Terry Campese (Hull KR) Anthony Milford (Broncos), Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (Storm), Reece Robinson (Eels), Sami Sauiluma (Sharks), Matt Allwood (Warriors), Matt McIlwrick (Roosters), Sam Mataora (Knights), Lagi Setu (Roosters)

The player to watch: Paul Vaughan, the high running, interchange specialist with a knack for the try line will go very close to origin this year.  Relatively unknown heading in to 2014, the 23-year-old Italian representative burst on to the scene with a series of quality performances off the bench, quickly making him a favourite of Dream Team coaches.  With Papalii and Fensom susceptible to injury, Vaughan is crucial to the green machine’s chances.

The youngster to watch: At just 22, it feels as though we’ve seen plenty of Edrick Lee already.  However, that’s probably because his highlight packages are so memorable and not an indicator of his age or longevity.  Lee spent most of last season on the sideline, but the cousin of NBA superstar Patty Mills, is now fitter than ever and in the best position to use his height and speed to his advantage.

The odds: $81.00

Last Year: 15th

This Year: Anthony Milford gone, Terry Campese gone.  Ricky Stuart still there but making no real impact at the club.  Equals another year of despair for the Raiders.  They’ll do well to finish higher than last year (which was second to last).

Cronulla Sharks

Ins: Ben Barba (Broncos), Michael Ennis (Bulldogs), Jayson Bukuya (Warriors), Mitch Brown (Bulldogs), Sami Sauiluma (Raiders), Jack Bird (Dragons), Gerard Beale (Dragons), Kyle Stanley (Dragons), Saulala Houma (Roosters)

Outs: Todd Carney (Catalans), Michael Lichaa (Bulldogs), Siosaia Vave (Sea Eagles), Jonathan Wright (Warriors), Tupou Sopoaga (Panthers), Sione Masima (Rabbitohs), John Morris (retired)

The player to watch: Putting contract negotiations, injuries and drug scandals to the side might allow Andrew Fifita to play the damaging football he’s capable of week in week out.  The enforcer who played 6o minutes against the Warriors last season with a broken arm is one of the toughest forwards in the game, and where expecting big things from him this NRL season.

The youngster to watch: Valentine Holmes has already proven his ability in first grade with a couple of standout performances on the wing last season.  This year he will also get the opportunity to share the fullback spot with Michael Gordon; a position we think he’ll be fantastic in.

The odds: $19.00

Last Year: 16th

This Year: Much better prospects this year after a rough couple of seasons.  The addition of Ennis will add much needed leadership during periods of origin and inevitable injury to Gallen / Fifita and could help them to a finish around 7-10.

Gold Coast Titans

Ins: Kierran Moseley (Panthers), Josh Hoffman (Broncos), David Hala (Broncos), Eddy Pettybourne (Wigan), Matt Robinson (Panthers), Ryan Simpkins (Panthers), Lachlan Burr (Bulldogs)

Outs: Brad Takairangi (Eels), Mark Minichiello (Hull), Cody Nelson (Eels), Sam Irwin (Featherstone), Steve Michaels (Hull), Albert Kelly (Hull KR), Maurice Blair (Hull KR), Beau Henry (Dragons), Ashley Harrison (retired)

The player to watch: The candidates for featuring this section have diminished over the past weeks as the NRL traces lines of inquiry in a cocaine scandal (see the pun).  Therefore, we’ll predict a big season for Josh Hoffman.  On the great hope of New Zealand rugby league, but competition for places in Brisbane seemed to have curtailed his growth.  Looked sharp at the Nines, and could be on his way back up.

The youngster to watch: Kierran Moseley’s a nice addition to the Titan’s side and will provide stiff competition for Matt Srama in the hooking berth.  Having experienced the big stage of the 2013 NYC Grand Final, Moseley will be right at home with all the media attention on his club.

The odds: $101.00

Last Year: 14th

This Year: Will finish last.  May even go bust.

Manly Sea Eagles

Ins: Willie Mason (Knights), Feleti Mateo (Warriors), Siosaia Vave (Sharks), Brayden Wiliame (Knights), Blake Leary (Cowboys), Jason King (retired)

Outs: Anthony Watmough (Eels), Glenn Stewart (Rabbitohs), Daniel Harrison (London)

The player to watch: Daly Cherry Evans and Kieran Foran create a dynamic halves duo – probably the best in the competition – but from next year they’re likely to experience what it is like without the other.  While Foran’s future is sorted, Cherry-Evans will have to balance contract negotiations with his footy while also managing the club’s and the stakeholder’s expectations.  He’s our player to watch because we think he can.

The youngster to watch: Clinton Gutherson’s speed is much better than his haircut.  The young flyer has shown real potential in the Nines format and with injuries to Jorge Taufua will get the opportunity to nail down a starting wing spot for some time.

The odds: $13.00

Last Year: Second (semifinalist)

This Year: Not enough support around Foran and DCE to warrant too much attention and in the midst of an early season injury crisis.  Will just scrape into the top eight.

Melbourne Storm

Ins: Dale Finucane (Bulldogs), Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (Raiders), Blake Green (Wigan)

Outs: Justin O’Neill (Cowboys), George Rose (Dragons), Ryan Hoffman (Warriors), Sisa Waqa (Raiders), Siosaia Vave (Sea Eagles), Ben Roberts (Castleford), Mitch Garbutt (Broncos), Junior Moors (Castleford), Cody Walker (Rabbitohs)

The player to watch: Something fairly uncommon happened at the end of last year.  Jesse Bromwich not only turned himself into the best prop in his team, he became the best prop in the NRL with a startling display in the business end of the NRL season and in the international Four Nations competition.  Bromwich has the feet, hands and size to better most and will play a crucial supporting role to the Storm’s ageing big three.

The youngster to watch: Jordan McLean didn’t get the chance to kick on last year after playing a role in the unfortunate Alex McKinnon tackle. Hopefully, this year the kid can deliver on his tremendous promise without the added scrutiny.

The odds: $13.00

Last Year: Sixth (elimination finalist)

This Year: Some punters will have you believe the Storm will miss the eight this year, and it is a possibility given they still haven’t found a way to cope during the origin period.  They have recruited nicely but still probably miss someone in the 6 jumper that will deliver them a trophy. 6th – 8th again this year.

Newcastle Knights

Ins: Jack Stockwell (Dragons), Tariq Sims (Cowboys), Carlos Tuimavave (Warriors), Sam Mataora (Raiders)

Outs: Darius Boyd (Broncos), Willie Mason (Sea Eagles), Adam Cuthbertson (Leeds), Travis Waddell (Broncos), Michael Dobson (Salford), Josh Mantellato (Hull KR), Zane Tetevano (Sea Eagles), Brayden Wiliame (Sea Eagles), Timana Tahu (retired)

The player to watch: Joseph Leilua has apparently slacked off over the summer and might not even feature in the opening round against the Storm.  That’s a shame because in last year’s Four Nations he was impossible to stop, and one of the stars of the tournament.  He’s still our player to watch because, the Knight’s lack others, and he’ll get on the park at some stage.

The youngster to watch: Sione Mata’utia is officially the youngest player to have ever played a test match for Australia.  He broke Israel Folau’s record when he debuted against England last year, and is destined to break even more records in 2015 – perhaps an NRL try-scoring record.  Keep an eye out.

The odds: $31.00

Last Year: 12th

This Year: We expect them to finish around 11th.  Rick Stone has his work cut out this year.

New Zealand Warriors

Ins: Ryan Hoffman (Storm), Matt Allwood (Raiders), Bodene Thompson (Tigers), Jonathan Wright (Sharks), Api Pewhairangi (Eels)

Outs: Feleti Mateo (Sea Eagles), Carlos Tuimavave (Knights), Jayson Bukuya (Sharks), Abraham Papalii (Roosters), Adam Tuimavave-Gerrard (Dragons), Dane Nielsen (Dragons), Sam Lousi (Waratahs)

The player to watch: The Mt Smart faithful will be hoping there’s plenty of running in Ryan Hoffman’s legs after the Warriors were the only club to offer the Melbourne veteran a three year deal.  The Warriors have a history of recruiting senior Australian players who do big things for them and this could be another example.  Will add seniority and defensive surety to an already promising squad.

The youngster to watch: His man bun might not be as impressive as some of the others that are set to take the NRL by storm this year, but his game is.  Solomone Kata was a revelation at the NRL Nines, and after injuries to Glen Fisiiahi and David Fusitu’a, Kata will make his debut on the wing, and get to show off his ridiculous wheels (and man bun).

The odds: $17.00

Last Year: Ninth

This Year: Will be surprised if they don’t finish in the top 8.  Possibly around 6th or 7th.  Sam Tomkins will be better in his second year and Hoffman’s addition will help ease the leadership tension on Simon Mannering.

North Queensland Cowboys

Ins: Ben Hannant (Broncos), Jake Granville (Broncos), Kelepi Tanginoa (Eels), Ben Spina (Pride), Justin O’Neill (Storm)

Outs: Tariq Sims (Knights), Ashton Sims (Warrington), Curtis Rona (Bulldogs), Brent Tate (retired)

The player to watch: Jason Taumalolo turned his back on a huge Warriors payday last week to stick with the Cowboys for a further three years.  His loyalty is another fantastic trait to go with his size, feet, and offloading abilities that make him so dynamic in the NRL.  He’ll flourish this year in his preferred middle of the park role.

The youngster to watch: Michael Morgan’s move to partner Jonathan Thurston in the halves has been met with widespread approval from NRL experts.  After a breakout year in 2014, Morgan’s star looks set to rise again with more time on the ball.

The odds: $9.00

Last Year: Fifth (semifinalist)

This Year: This could be the year that the Cowboys go all the way – depending on the refereeing standard in the playoffs of course.  Will finish in the top 3.

Parramatta Eels

Ins: Anthony Watmough (Sea Eagles), Brad Takairangi (Titans), Reece Robinson (Raiders), Beau Champion (Rabbitohs), Cody Nelson (Titans), Ben Crooks (Hull)

Outs: Jarryd Hayne (NFL), Api Pewhairangi (Warriors), Willie Tonga (Catalans), Mitchell Allgood (Hull KR), Kelepi Tanginoa (Cowboys), Lee Mossop (Wigan), Liam Foran (London), Fuifui Moimoi (Leigh)

The player to watch: Jarryd Hayne is irreplaceable we get that.  However, Will Hopoate is a damn fine footballer in his own right.  He looked a little off the place early in his first season back last year, but should be better for the experience of regular footy (and origin footy), and he’ll be more comfortable in the fullback jersey in 2015.

The youngster to watch: The two rugby [league] players that people often compare 19-year-old Tepai Moeroa to are Sonny Bill Williams and Nathan Hindmarsh, which showcases the high regard many hold him in.  The former rugby player is a tackling machine, and the Eels environment has already proven conducive to breeding quality forwards.  He’s in our fantasy team.

The odds: $41.00

Last Year: 10th

This Year: Losing a Dally M Medal winners leaves a massive void in a squad, but it also frees up some salary cap to sign the like of Anthony Watmough and Kieran Foran.  Even with the addition of Watmough we think the Eels will struggle to 12th / 13th this year.

Penrith Panthers

Ins: Apisai Koroisau (Rabbitohs), Tupou Sopoaga (Sharks)

Outs: Kierran Moseley (Titans), Eto Nabuli (Dragons), Tim Grant (Rabbitohs), Kevin Naiqama (Tigers), Wes Naiqama (London), Matt Robinson (Titans), Ryan Simpkins (Titans), Kevin Kingston (retired)

The player to watch: James Segeyaro’s arrival as an 80-minute hooker was both high quality and unexpected.  For someone that made his bread and butter with cameo appearances, the young hooker surprised many by taking his game to the next level at the end of last year.  He’ll be crucial this year too – but he’ll have live wire South’s recruit Apisai Koroisau to keep him company.

The youngster to watch: Matt Moylan’s probably not considered young by NRL standards anymore, especially now that he has a couple of seasons up his sleeve.  He’s still incredible however.  Moylan knows exactly when to inject himself into the backline and it’s that nous that will serve the Panthers well this year.

The odds: $10.00

Last Year: Fourth (elimination finalist)

This Year: Ivan Clearly and Phil Gould have transformed this team from overrated individuals to accomplished title contenders.  They’ll go close this year again and should finish in the top 5.

St George Illawarra Dragons

Ins: Dane Nielsen (Warriors), Eto Nabuli (Panthers), Kris Keating (Hull KR), George Rose (Storm), Beau Henry (Titans), Heath L’Estrange (Roosters), Adam Tuimavave-Gerrard (Warriors)

Outs: Brett Morris (Bulldogs), Kyle Stanley (Sharks), Jack Stockwell (Knights), Sam Williams (Raiders), Jack Bird (Sharks), Matt Groat (Salford Red Devils), Gerard Beale (Sharks), Michael Witt (Dragons)

The player to watch: On paper Josh Dugan is the Dragons best player (sorry Gareth and Trent).  Whether he’s mucking in at centre or sparking from fullback, Dugan is origin quality, and if he stays injury free will have a big impact for the Dragons in 2015.

The youngster to watch: Eto Nabuli looks to be the buy of the season if NRL Nines form is anything go by.  Nabuli stole the show in Auckland and will almost certainly get a start in week one.  Euan Aitken is pretty handy too.

The odds: $41.00

Last Year: 11th

This Year: Still finding their feet under Paul McGregor (as is Benji Marshall).  Therefore, likely to finish around 14th.

Sydney Roosters

Ins: Blake Ferguson, Martin Kennedy (Broncos), Lagi Setu (Raiders), Abraham Papalii (Warriors), Matt McIlwrick (Raiders)

Outs: Sonny Bill Williams (Chiefs), Frank-Paul Nu’uausala (Raiders), Tautau Moga (Cowboys), Remi Casty (Catalans), Heath L’Estrange (Dragons), Curtis Naughton (Hull), Saulala Houma (Sharks), Anthony Minichiello (Roosters)

The player to watch: Blake Ferguson is no stranger to the headlines.  We’re predicting a return to the headlines for the right reasons this year with devastating attacking play.  Keep him off the booze and the Roosters will go well.

The youngster to watch: Jackson Hastings is a former Australian Schoolboys representative who predominantly plays in the halves or at hooker.  With Jake Friend out for the first 6 weeks, Hastings should get his chance from the interchange bench.

The odds: $6.00

Last Year: First (preliminary finalist)

This Year: Too many big names to not feature in the finals series.  Sonny Bill is not too big a loss when you have Aidan Guerra and Boyd Cordner to pick up the slack.  Top 4 again this year.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

Ins: Glenn Stewart (Sea Eagles), Tim Grant (Panthers), Cody Walker (Storm), Sione Masima (Sharks), Daryl Millard (Catalans)

Outs: Sam Burgess (Bath), Ben Te’o (Leinster), Beau Champion (Eels), Apisai Koroisau (Panthers)

The player to watch: Dylan Walker’s form last year was rewarded with a representative jersey, and there’s no doubt he’ll be better for the experience.  Looked in ominous form in the World Club Challenge against St Helens recently.

The youngster to watch: Chris Grevsmuhl’s second year with the Rabbitoh’s top grade side is expected to bring better things than his first.  A knee reconstruction prevented him from taking any part last year, but he should be on the interchange for round 1 against the Broncos.  Rightly so.

The odds: $5.00

Last Year: Third (winners)

This Year: Sam Burgess leaves a big hole, but George Burgess, Issac Luke and Greg Inglis are still around to shoulder the burden of being current NRL and NRL Nines champions.  They’ll finish in the top 4 again this year and will go close to defending.

Wests Tigers

Ins: Kevin Naiqama (Panthers), Josh Drinkwater (London)

Outs: Adam Blair (Broncos), Blake Austin (Raiders), Braith Anasta (retired), James Gavet (Broncos), Bodene Thompson (Warriors), Jy Hitchcox (Featherstone)

The player to watch: If James Tedesco can stay on the park for longer than 80 minutes he’s our player to watch.  If not, it’s probably Aaron Woods.  Fullbacks make more interesting players to watch than props though, so we’ll stick with Tedesco.

The youngster to watch: Matthew Lodge isn’t that likeable.  He was sanctioned for writing a c-bomd on his wrist strapping in the Under 20’s last year and was arrested as recently as 11 January.  Nonetheless, he’s supposedly a decent player – so look out.

The odds: $41.00

Last Year: 13th

This Year: The Tigers have some handy players, and will cause many an upset in 2015.  Just not enough to feature in the playoffs.  10th for Farah’s men.
