Eels (29) v (16) Rabbitohs

Round 3 started off in style with the Eels hosting the Premiers at Pirtek. The matched opened with the Rabbitohs scoring through Joel Reddy (8th) on the receiving end of slick passing through the line. The Eels replied 6 minutes later courtesy of John Folau who took a short pass 10 out to step and crash through defenders (14th).  Reynolds was done for decent towards the pocket referee and Sandow converted the penalty however he redeemed himself shortly after putting up a difficult bomb which was blundered by the Eels and Grensmuhl pounced for his first (34th). On the stroke of half time a barn storming run 10 out from John Folau carrying 3 Rabbitohs with him over the line saw him pick up his second try of the night (39th). The Eels were at it again early in the second half with some slick hands passing through the line giving Reece Robinson the advantage over his inside defense and he kicked into 2nd gear to get around a diving Inglis for the try (42nd). The Premiers under the pump in the second half, taking nearly 20 minutes to get substantial possession and a try scoring opportunity. A numbers game out wide saw the Rabbitohs strike back with a try to Alex Johnston (60th). It didn’t take long for the Eels to reply with Reece Robinson again getting the better of the defense, getting around his opposite on the outside (67th). Sandow extended the lead by 7 with a drop goal (76th) and on the stroke of full time Sandow grubber was spilled back into his path and easy pick up and dive gave Sandow the last laugh (79th).

Wests Tigers (24) v (25) Canterbury Bulldogs

ANZ Stadium hosted the Tigers and Bulldogs, a match full of expectation. The Tigers first out of the blocks with a try inside 4 minutes when Kyle Lovett slipped through a yawning Bulldogs defensive line. The Doggies hit back after some well constructed plays through the middle to have Frank Prichard bulldoze close to the line and make an offload millimeters from the ground to put Curtis Rona over (15th).  Both team squandering chances for the remainder of the half. The Tigers charged into the second 40 much like the first scoring early with Luke Brooks blocking a poor grubber into the Tigers half, he scooped up the deflection running 50 metres to dot down (45th). 3 minutes later some slick running from dummy half put the Tigers ahead of the advantage line and a tactical grubber into space bounced favorably into Tedescos’ hands only having to run over the line to dot down (48th). Brooks was at it again from dummy half putting through a pin point grubber for Tedesco to run onto making it his second for the night (55th). With the gap widening the Doggies managed to apply some pressure to the Tigers with their big men running hard, Lichaa found himself over the try line after beating some tired tackles close to the line (58th). Curtis Rona added to his tally 8 minutes later after some excellent dummy pass skills courtesy of Kasiano to feed an open Rona (66th). The Doggies evened up the game with 5 to go through a Josh Morris run away. Golden point commenced and an 83rd minute droppy from Moses Mbye sealed victory for the Bulldogs.

Newcastle Knights (26) v (14) Penrith Panthers

The unbeaten Knights hosted a Penrith Panthers outfit missing Soward and Segearo at Hunter Stadium. The hosts were strongest early on with a try to Chris Houston (7th) after receiving a short ball 5 out showing great balance and footwork for a big man to dot down. A dummy half run catching the Panthers defenders napping extended the score (14th) courtesy of Clydsdale.  Mounting pressure was taking its toll on the Panthers with well worked second man play seeing Gidley take the contact and bounce out of the tackle to crash over for the Knights 3rd (17th). After so much pressure the Panthers finally got a real attacking opportunity and cashed in through slick passing from the left hand attack feeding Mansour who gracefully stepped inside his opposite to dot down (23rd). Two missed opportunities from the Panthers saw them go into half 14 points down. Uate was the next man on the board with the Knights line drawing the defense to lead to an overlap, Uate dotting down (52nd). The Panthers hitting back, attacking the right hand defense and only to spin it back the other way and Moylan hitting a gap 20 out to dot down (65th). The Panthers getting back to back tries with Dean Whare pushing the advantage line to bust through some fragile Knights defense (71st). Newcastle withstood the onslaught keeping the Panthers scoreless in the final 5, Tyrone Roberts slotting a penalty on the final whistle.

Cronulla Sharks (22) v (24) Gold Coast Titans

Both teams winless coming into the round, the Sharks hosted the Titans at Remondis. Michael Gordon putting the Sharks on the board early with a penalty (2nd) after a high shot. The opening 20 was dull as both sides were guilty of poor execution. Dave Taylor eventually crashing over after some ugly play 10 out from both sides losing possession, Taylor catching out defenders not playing the whistle (20th). The Sharks were quick to reply, Valentine Holmes getting the luck of the bounce with a dodgy grubber falling into his hands and he had little work to do beating his opposite on the outside (26th). Another Sharks try was on the board after the Sharks dissected the Titans up through the middle with Ennis running support to dot down under the posts (32nd). James Roberts claimed a try just inside of halftime with the Sharks defense ball watching a grubber hoping it would go out (41st). A pinpoint kick 20 out from Robson into the in-goal area was casually claimed by Holmes getting his second (47th). Nate Myles turned playmaker with a short burst 10 out and a beautiful short ball to Sezer on his shoulder seeing Sezer crash over (59th). Michael Gordon extended the Sharks lead with two penalties (65th & 72nd) after the Titans ill discipline in the tackle cost them. The four point lead evaporated with a soft pass on attack being intercepted by James Roberts who dotted down to even it up, Sezer converting to give the Titans the win.

St George-Illawarra Dragons (12) v (4) Manly Sea Eagles

The Dragons dominating possession inside the opening 10 with with Nightingale dotting in the corner after a slick offload from Duggan in contact (9th). Ill discipline from the Sea Eagles at ruck time cost them 3 points, pushing over the ball player, Widdop converting (24th). Duggan falling short on the stroke of halftime to extend the lead. Hiku nearly opening the Sea Eagles account early into the half with a heroic dive for the corner only to plant the ball out of play but with more possession midway into the second the Eagles finally dotting down through a Keiran Foran grubber cleaned up by Brayden Willame (58th). Off the ball infringement from Luke Burgess 30 out cost the Sea Eagles another 2 points with Widdop slotting the conversion (69th). The Sea Eagles had appeared to score through Willame but the officials deemed the Foran pass to go forward in the previous play. Dragons hold on.

The Broncos absorbing early pressure from the hosts and replying with a try through a experience cut out pass courtesy of Justin Hodges, Corey Oates dotting down in the corner (11th). The Broncos continued their crisp passing game catching the Warriors defense on the back foot, Lachlan Maranta diving over in the opposite corner (16th). The Warriors breaking the Broncos line but failing to convert points, Broncos dotting down again with Jarrod Wallace crashing over by the sticks (38th). Early into the second half the Warriors claimed their own bomb with a tap back to Allwood who found Townsend inside him, Townsend sprinting 10 to dive to over for the Warriors first (45th). Retaining possession was paying off for the Warriors and Shaun Johnson ran a great angle, with a behind the back offload opening a huge gap for Allgood to gallop through from 20 out, Allgood dotting down (64th) Another massive bomb from Johnson was tapped back by Vatuvei and Solomone Kata claiming the spoils to even it up (69th). Ill discipline at ruck time from the Warriors cost them two points and a short restart was fumbled by the Warriors back over the in-goal line with Andrew McCullough dotting down to seal the victory (79th).

Sydney Roosters (34) v (6) Canberra Raiders

The Roosters hosting the Canberra Raiders at ALLIANZ Stadium. The hosts hot favorites going into the match, they did not disappoint the home crowd. Shaun Kenny-Dowall opened the scoring for the hosts after the Rooster line fed a series of passes gaining the advantage line and Pearce throwing a superb cut out pass to Kenny-Dowall who dotted down in the corner (4th). Tuivasa-Sheck extended the lead after he found a gaping hole in the defense, easing past the last man to score (10th). The Roosters continuing to make metres and gain ascendency found them over again after Blake Ferguson ran a great angle from 10 out, dummying, and the defence falling off gifted Ferguson an easy try (27th). Minutes out from half time an well constructed Raiders attack was finished off with a soft grubber which bounced favorably for Croker who beat the man and dotted down to open the Raiders account. That was all she wrote for the Raiders with the Roosters scoring 3 minutes into the second half, the Raiders defense flat footed and falling for the support runners allowing Jennings to walse over (43rd). Daniel Tupou was next on the board through air supremecy, easily defusing a bomb and crashing over the line (48th). North Queensland Cowboys (18) v (17) Melbourne Storm

Townsville hosted the final game of the round with the Cowboys facing the Melbourne Storm. The Storm were first to strike with a well constructed move out left seeing Kurt Mann take the overlap and crash through the last man (6th). The Cowboys were hot on a reply with hard yards up the middle and Thurston throwing a ranging cut out pass to Winterstein with the overlap, easily stepping inside to dive over (12th). Koroibete difussed a high bomb will ease and caught the attacking Cowboys off guard as he charged through napping defenders to race 90 meters and score (27th). The Storm hot on attack were over the line again as Kafusi was on the end a well timed shortball 10 out to ease through the defense (34th). Midway through the second half some slick cut out passing and dynamic running from the Cowboys left side attack opened the Storm defence up, Winterstein on the end of it all picking up his second (60th). With 10 to go Cooper Cronk slotted a field goal to put the Storm 7 points ahead (70th). Premier League Preview Sep 20th – 21st

After a busy week in Europe, it will be interesting to see how the top teams cope with a return to PremierLeague action.

Probably the poorest showing by a Premiership side was Arsenal’s disappointing 2-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund. They are really struggling to live up to the pre-season hype and face a very tricky game at a revitalised Aston Villa.

Paul Lambert managed to engineer a victory at Anfield last weekend and Villa fans must be getting dizzy after three victories that have left them in second place in the table. They are only two points behind leaders Chelsea who travel to Man City on Sunday so Villa could top the league on Saturday night!

Arsenal fans will point to their incredible record at Villa Park where they have not list in their last fifteen league visits. They ought to have beaten Man City last week but had to settle for a draw and they will be looking to Danny Welbeck to provide the goals. Arsene Wenger’s team are difficult to predict at the moment but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them come away with a draw at least.

The early kick-off sees QPR welcome Stoke after Harry Redknapp’s team were totally outclassed by Man United’s new-look side. Rangers did manage to beat Sunderland in their previous game but they have generally looked like a side we can expect to see in the thick of the relegation battle this season. Stoke beat Man City and then lost at home to Leicester and I am expecting Mark Hughes to galvanise them for a victory here.

Alan Pardew is surely on borrowed time at Newcastle. He has even had the dreaded vote of confidence from his employers, usually the kiss of death. The Magpies are bottom of the league and were slaughtered by Southampton last week. Hull are in buoyant mood after a successful venture into the transfer market and played well in a 2-2 draw with West Ham on Monday night. It may be worth supporting The Tigers to deal the hammer blow to Pardew, ironically the same clash that saw the infamous head-butting incident last season.

Swansea versus Southampton is an intriguing contest with the home side dropping their first points at Stamford Bridge and the Saints flying after thumping Newcastle. Ronald Koeman seems to be working a kind of mini-miracle at St Mary’s and Southampton beat Swansea twice last season. I thought that Swansea played well against Chelsea and a draw could be on the agenda here.

West Ham play Liverpool in the late kick-off and must fancy their chances of getting a result. The Reds were very poor in their return to the Champions League against a well-organised but moderate side. They needed an injury-time penalty to scrape a win and were beaten by Villa last week. Liverpool have won seven of the last meetings here but the Hammers showed plenty of resolve against Hull on Monday. I think it might be a struggle but Liverpool can take the points.

The big match on Sunday is the clash between champions Man City and high-flying Chelsea. The Blues had the wind taken out of their sails a bit in midweek when only managing a draw against Schalke 04. If nothing else, that game underlined just how important Diego Costa is to the team.  He will doubtless prove a handful for City and can get on the scoresheet.

City were unlucky to concede a late goal against Bayern Munich although they had been hanging on in that game. A draw would end Chelsea’s 100% record but would have to be seen as a decent result.

Man United’s huge investment finally brought a dividend last week against QPR and Leicester should go the same way while Everton brushed aside Wolfsburg in the Europa League and can see off Crystal Palace.

Newcastle Saturday Preview

The withdrawal of Pique Sous from the Northumberland Plate has at least given us a bit of value with our 10-1 about Angel Gabrial. He now looks set to start at about half those odds but it’s a very tough race and we can only hope that he gets luck in running.

George Chaloner has the task of delivering him as late as possible. I have mixed feelings about the number 1 stall as it is better than being stuck out wide. My only concern is that he gets shuffled back early on.

Oriental Fox was desperately unlucky not to win this last year when collared on the line by Tominator. I like horses returning for a race that they have run well in previously but the weight puts me off despite his sixth in the Gold Cup. Suegioo and Nearly Caught are other interesting runners but I’m not keen to get involved further in such a tricky race.

The best bet on the card is You’re Fired for Karl Burke in the closing handicap. He ran on strongly over six furlongs at Doncaster in March and then won over seven furlongs at Haydock. He got himself trapped on the rail behind horses that day but managed to come around the field and get up close home. He is up 6lbs but has an extra furlong to travel and has scope for further improvement.

The William Haggas stable remains in fantastic form and he has two exciting prospects tomorrow. Muthmir has his first start as a four-year-old in the sprint handicap and the vibes are encouraging. He showed plenty of dash last season before disappointing on his final start but he could be better than his rating of 87. His rivals are mostly exposed so it is worth taking a chance on his potential.

Saayerr was a speedy juvenile and he can take the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes to complete the Haggas double. His fourth place in the Free Handicap over seven furlongs reads well with the winner having run well in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas. Saayerr has always looked more of a sprinter so the drop back to six should see him return to winning ways.

Gosforth Park Cup Preview

Newcastle takes centre stage this weekend with the Pitmen’s Derby over two miles but Friday nights card is all about sprinting. The Gosforth Park Cup may not quite have the prestige of some of the other top sprints but it always attracts a good quality field.

Two horses catch the eye, both impressive winners last time out. The first is the likely favourite Algar who cruised to an effortless victory at Leicester last time out. You don’t often see a jockey having time to look around in the closing stages of a five furlong contest but Daniel Tudhope could hardly keep Algar back in his efforts to keep the winning distance respectable.

That was off a mark of 75 and he races off 86 here including a 6lb penalty. That is hardly ideal but the manner of his victory suggests that he may be up to the task. The problem is the draw as he is in 13 and a low draw is usually best in sprints here. He was also a little slowly away in his previous race at Musselburgh and a slow start would just about finish his chances here.

The other recent winner that I like is Asian Trader, mainly because he is trained by William Haggas. The stable is in absolutely flying form and just about anything he saddles has a chance at the moment. Although he did not have a winner at Royal Ascot, his percentage is staggering at the smaller tracks of late and you have to give Asian Trader serious consideration.

Asian Trader is to be ridden by 7lbs claimer Georgia Cox who rode her first winner on Fathom Five for Shaun Harris at Ripon only last week. The horse won for Stephanie Joannides last time out so obviously goes well for a girl and is suited by a quieter style of riding. He is drawn seven and ought to be competitive from there.

Georgia has ridden the horse before when finishing down the field at Newmarket but that was his first start of the season. At odds of 12-1, the combination look worth a little each-way.

Burning Thread is also up 6lbs for a recent win over Bear Behind at Ayr. That was the first form he has produced since winning at Sandown last season and he is handily drawn in stall 4.

Northumberland Plate Preview

The Pitmen’s Derby is the highlight of Newcastle’s card on Saturday. This race is one of the top staying handicaps of the season and usually attracts runners from the Chester Cup and Royal Ascot. This year looks like being no exception with the early market leaders being Ascot winner Pique Sous and Chester Cup 1-2, Suegioo and Angel Gabrial.

Pique Sous landed a gamble on the Queen Alexandra Race, the closing event of Royal Ascot week. The grey gets a 5lbs penalty for his comfortable win there but this race comes only a fortnight after the two and three-quarter mile marathon.

Trainer Willie Mullins also has top weight Simenon entered but I think it may be a tall order for last year’s Gold Cup runner-up. Simenon has travelled the globe since that race but hinted at a return to form when fifth to Leading Light. I’d rather see him put away for another tilt at the Melbourne Cup in November.

The one that interests me is Angel Gabrial, trained by Richard Fahey. The five-year-old hit form at Ripon in April when beating the well-backed Mubaraza. He benefitted from a change of tactics that day, being held up at the rear of the field before rushing through in the closing stages. He displayed a tendency to hang when hitting the front which ought to have alerted connections ahead of the Chester Cup in May.

Jamie Spencer took over from David Nolan for the big race and he was well supported in to 7-1. After being held up at the rear, Spencer made a rapid move through the field and swept to the front well over a furlong from home. Whether or not the horse surprised him with his acceleration I am not sure, but was left as a sitting duck in the home straight.

It was Suegioo in the same colours of Dr Marwan Koukash that emerged as the late challenger and Angel Gabrial hung across to his rival, forfeiting further ground. He went under by just half a length and is 1lb better off with the winner. My feeling is that he would definitely have won had his run been delayed and I am expecting exaggerated waiting tactics on Saturday.

With sixty horses still entered, it is too early to study the rest of the field in depth but Angel Gabrial makes plenty of appeal at 10-1 each-way.

Eider Chase Preview

Tasaday (tipped at 4-1) kept our noses in front at Meydan on Thursday but what happened to Certify? She lost her unbeaten record with a very disappointing display. I had my concerns when she was reluctant to enter the stalls so perhaps this was just an “off day”. It will be back to the drawing board with her as far as the big summer Group 1 races are concerned.

Back home and it is still nice weather for ducks with the weekend rapidly approaching. Our ante-post selections for the BetBright Chase have held their ground and the other big race is the Eider Chase at Newcastle. This is a very odd race in that it is over four miles and a furlong. The only other races in the calendar worthy of note over such an exhaustive trip are the National Hunt Chase, Scottish National and the Grand National.

In short, stamina is the one element that you simply have to take into account. That is even more important with the going heavy. If you remember Red Marauder’s National, that will give you some idea what to expect on Saturday!

I thought Haydock’s Grand National Trial was bad enough with only the Venetia Williams pair still able to put one hoof in front of the other in the closing stages but this could be even worse. I cannot see the top weights managing to cope but I am concerned that David Pipe may pull out both Junior and Master Overseer and trigger a weights rise.

Williams may run Relax after his Sandown victory in similar ground and it’s almost worth backing him purely because she is the trainer. He beat Ardkilly Witness by three lengths and the runner-up is well fancied for the big race at Kempton. A 7lbs penalty is not too much of a concern but he has yet to prove that he stays this sort of trip.

Sun Cloud is the one horse that seems to have bottomless stamina and handles any ground. The handicapper has put him up 12lbs for an 11-length win at Catterick and that would normally put me off. He has 11st 2lb at present but it would be a big worry if he finds himself with top weight on Friday night.

Tutchec has chalked up four wins in lower grade races but I wasn’t impressed with his jumping last time. I had an each-way bet on Royale Knight in the Warwick Classic and he scraped into a place behind Shotgun Paddy. He has won over four miles but he was going nowhere in the closing stages at Warwick and I am inclined to pass him over.

Smoking Aces travels well in his races and I thought he was going to win at Ffos Las last time. A couple of errors knocked the stuffing out of him and he could only stay on at one pace into third behind Emperor’s Choice. The winner ran well at Haydock last week so Smoking Aces has to be in contention here too.
